What makes a Slayer what she is?
I think that the essence of what the Slayer was originally was most captured by Vi.
The woman that Buffy met in End of Days called herself a Guardian. The Shadowmen called Buffy the Last Guardian of the Hellmouth. I think that that's how the Slayers started: as Guardians. And the Shadowmen contained their power, put in the demon essence. What if that was to instill the need to fight and kill demons? Buffy felt the need to hunt in Buffy vs. Dracula.
I mentioned Vi as an example of what a Slayer is. She was magnificent, both in battle and afterward. That's the part that the Watcher's Council stifled: the healer part of the protector/healer that the Slayer should be. By removing their connections, by making their love for humanity muffled, they took away a vital part of the Guardians and turned them into Slayers instead. Perhaps what they did was separate the two elements: put all the fight into their new Slayer and pull the strength out of the Guardian, who use all of their powers to keep at least one of them alive long enough to speak to a Slayer. To heal the breach.
Thus, Buffy was a Guardian because she was trying, however much she stumbled at times, to be both protector and healer.
And now all these girls are Guardians: they won't just use their abilities and their power to defend and protect. They'll use them to help rebuild the world. To help change it and heal it.
They don't just have power. They have strength.
I think that I'm going to go watch Peacekeeper again. Such a great vid.
