I spent the last couple of hours searching for this great Merry&Pippin short. I could remember the last line, but not the title or the author. Oh, and it turned out, it was Waiting for Light by Lobelia Sackville-Baggins. Very good vignette.

It makes me hurt, this story. It's Merry at Pippin's bedside, in the House of Healing. It's Merry, going over where Pippin is wounded and remembering past hurts. It's mild slash, one kiss mentioned, but the part that I remembered is the pained love and failure. I hadn't even remembered that it was one of the ones that tipped over to slash until I found it again. Probably because so many of these stories tread the line between slash and non - I know that the three I've written can be read either way. None of the LotR fic that I've written demand eros in addition to their assumption of philios. They can easily be read in that light, but they can, I believe, also be read in quite a different one. It depends on what you focus on, just as the slash in canon does.

It's all a matter of perspective. Of angles. Of shade. Of point-of-view. We often see in things what we put there. We read the story our souls tell us.

I often find myself longing for good friendship fics in Buffy or Smallville fandoms, but I haven't a clue where to start looking. In Rings, it isn't so hard to find a fic that's primarily about friendships - about deep bonds that have nothing at all to do with sex, or at least can be easily read that way. I also enjoy reading fics that blur the line without going too far over. Fics where it's about subtext and not text.

I like trying to find a fic and not remembering whether or not it's slash - because in the context of the fic, it doesn't matter as much as the emotion and love. When I reread stories, I often skip the sex bits and only read the emotional parts - the character and relationship moments.

You've read Baylor's stories, haven't you? She writes the most perfect hobbit friendship-centered stories.

I have indeed. Wonderful stuff. Thank you for the rec, though.

LotR is great for this stuff, really.

*pokes Buffy and Smallville*

It's these two great lumps who have trouble ponying up the good friendship fics.
