On Wesley (Mildly Deeper Thoughts)

So, Gunn can speak demon languages now.

Wesley must be feeling even more like he has no place. Everything that he does, someone else can do, and he has no reason to be at Wolfram and Hart - he went for Lilah's sake and didn't save her.

Couldn't save her.

They keep pointing out the shanshu - they keep reminding us of what Angel did - and they keep showing us that Wesley doesn't have a good reason for being at Wolfram and Hart.

And those three things are all bound up together in last season. In Connor. In Angel's destiny.

Everyone else has found a purpose. Wesley keeps trying to find one in being a help to the people around him, but he's at loose ends all the same. It's not working. He's getting frustrated.

I just get the feeling that things are building up with him - with the shanshu - with Angel. I'm not sure what he'd do if he finds out the truth - I've never really been able to anticipate him. I just know that I'm looking forward to seeing it.

I think you're right - when we watch this season all in a piece, Wesley's small bits of purposelessness will likely be pointing to a whole lot of trouble.

Which I'm all for. Wesley needs something positive to focus on, or things go all to hell for everyone (see: S3).

Angel should know better

I think Angel *does* know better; why he lets him run idle is anyone's guess though-- from a subconscious, perverse pleasure in Wesley's confusion and discomfort to ignorance despite the willingness to help to a certain Hamletian state of knowing exactly what to do but but being unable to act accordingly...

Hmm. And maybe Angel feels that he deserves whatever hell Wesley will unleash this time.

Good point from a psychological perspective-- if Angel is indeed as screwed up as this indicates, ensuring that, via Wesley, the world he created will crumble through a reversal of the mind-wipe, he will certainly have hell to pay.

Well, Angel's pretty screwed up, so I wouldn't put it past him.
