Thoughts on fanfiction, brief

Sometimes, I get the urge to read a long, meaty fanfic story of a certain pairing.
Sadly, many times, I find myself frustrated by choosing a pairing wherein I can't find any long, good stories. Sure, if I'm in the mood for Clex, I'm set -- there's some great stuff out there, much of it long and highly enjoyable. And Harry/Draco isn't too hard to find. Fraser/Kowalski is also pretty easy to locate.
But sometimes, I want to read a lengthy O'Brien/Bashir and, well, I haven't yet found one (and if you have, I would love to read it). Or I'm in the mood for an epic Buffy/Xander, which can be thin on the ground (though I have found a few). Or John/Chiana. Gil/Nick. Fred/Wes. Ghanima/Leto II. These are harder to find (again, if you've found any of them, please let me know).
Sometimes, I think that the only way to get the stories I want is to write them. And that's not really the same. Oh, it might be fun (and it would, and I should work more on my stories -- though I am taking two writing-related classes next term, which should help keep my mind on the subject, at least) but it would be mine, which takes the 'first time' feeling out of it.
And while I'm here...

Say you were meeting a new person--blind date, new friend who knows? And you wanted them to have some idea of what kind of person you are, and who you are, but you can't actually tell them in so many words. Instead, you have to give them a box with a dozen things for them to look at, touch, read, taste, listen to, whatever. A copy of, or a link to your LJ (or a real diary) would be the same thing as telling them directly, so that's not allowed!
1. Firefly (dvd set)
2. Reading the Vampire Slayer: An Unofficial Critical Companion to Buffy and Angel
3. A dried rose - white with reddish edges
4. Silver butterfly earrings
5. The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (dvd -- extended edition)
6. Newsies (movie)
7. Velvet Goldmine (movie)
8. The Harry Potter books
9. A ring - silver, with red stones
10. Moulin Rouge (dvd -- two disc set)
11. Hedwig and the Angry Inch (dvd)
12. *NSYNC -- Live from Madison Square Garden (dvd)

Date: 2004-03-11 09:50 am (UTC)For long Epics my favorite is Lost Destiny Series. It's long and slightly AU but the characters rally hold to theire BTVS counter parts. Excellent on all accounts.
For tons of smutty fun I also recommend The Cure Series. Starts off as PWP but ends up with a good emotional plot.
Hope that helped!

Date: 2004-03-11 10:42 am (UTC)It is tempting to write it myself, but I'm not sure I'd do a very good job of it.

Any fandom, any pairing, any style of fanfic. Yes, even RPsmut."
