Spent much of the latter part of the movie slashing Charles Howard and Red. In the final horserace, everyone else shouts for Biscuit to go for the win, he shouts for Red.

Also, I blame this partly on the wife being really boring.

Howard was cheering for Red because he saw Red as a replacement for his dead son. I'm trying to decide whether your interpretation of that scene owes more to your general interest in slash or your interest in incest. (I remember all those posts you made about Children of Dune!) :-)

I was also a fan of the Connor/Cordy thing.

It's probably a combination of both, coupled with finding the wife boring (my dad thought she was, too) and being in mild shock over seeing Tobey have intense chemistry with someone (as he usually comes off as extremely asexual to me).

It would have been interesting to see your reaction had the film-makers been more faithful to the book, where it was made fairly clear that Howard saw Seabiscuit, not Red, as a replacement for his son. :-)
