Stargate stuff:
Jan. 20th, 2005 01:06 amI'm a bit miffed at the scheduling change for Stargate SG-1. Two reasons -- I did harbor the vague desire to watch Joan of Arcardia for the rest of the season. More importantly? A few months ago, I rescheduled my job around the 9 p.m. time. There are two night shifts that can be worked (on drive-through). One is until 11ish, the other until 8ish. I requested the earlier shift on Fridays specifically so that I could get home before SG-1 started and could record it without commercials. This plan is now clearly useless.
So, bad Sci-Fi. No cookie.
But all that aside, I am very much looking forward to the rest of the season.
So, the primary change in my AU is that Daniel is a chick (Abigail). This changes quite a bit, partly because of one huge thing that it changes -- Abigail doesn't marry Sha'uri. Because of that, I've had Abigail return to Earth with Jack. Because of that, the Stargate program (Research and Defense) starts six months before it does in 'our' reality. Which means that they had six months of exploration before Apophis came knocking. Which means a number of other things -- the timeline is completely different because some planets were chosen because they're just next and some are chosen because of a Goa'uld related reason.
Example: The Broca Divide still happened at the same time, timewise, but other missions (like Thor's Hammer) that in our canon occurred after that would have happened first, because BD was chosen based on info that the escaped people from Chulak gave to the SGC.
And as Teal'c can't be a member of the team before they meet him, the Cimmeria encounter itself would be completely different.
Trying to figure out what goes where is a lot of fun.

Date: 2005-01-20 12:46 pm (UTC)Good point. And yet... plan! Ah, well. The best laid plans and all.
Your AU sounds fascinating.
Thank you kindly. I'm still working out all the bits that are different. It's much more complicated that I'd thought when I first said to myself, "Gosh, it would be cool to have a female AU Daniel visit the SGC post-Endgame."
On the plus side, it's so much fun. Timeline-wise, I've already decided to kill the Enkarans and save Kawalsky (they find out about Thor's Hammer before Children of the Gods and The Enemy Within happen, so when he gets snaked, they have the quick fix right there). It's great fun.
And the best part about that stuff? It may not even show up in the main story (won't unless there's a reason). Yet I still get to make it up and have it be part of Abigail's canon. Backstory! Yay. No one at our SGC may ever need to know that Sam and Rodney married in Abigail's universe, yet it still will have happened. Fun stuff.
I'm already at fourteen pages of actual story. For me, this is huge. And it's going to end up much longer, I can feel it. Teal'c hasn't even shown up yet, and he's got a huge part to play.

Date: 2005-01-20 06:51 pm (UTC)Well, it helps that they meet sooner and thus not in a crisis. Of course, McKay is still an idiot in their first few meetings, but he can't get sent to Russia because, as a civilian, Abigail had him transferred to her branch, thanks much, and she wants him to stay on base (partly because his more cautious suggestions regarding actually paying attention to the security protocols appeal to her) where he can actually be helpful. She's all about claiming the smart people for SGR.

Date: 2005-01-20 07:02 pm (UTC)One of the reasons that I chose a completely different name (though I actually checked baby books and those 'test your name' things for one that had similiar 'exploring' and 'sacrificing' vibes as Daniel) is because most parents do have at least two names in mind -- one if it's a boy, another if it's a girl. My mom wouldn't have named my brother 'Kristine' if he'd been a girl, she probably would have Abigail she needed a different name. Both Danial and Abigail are from the same tradition (Hebrew) which was something important to me, but the meaning of the names is, of course very different and wow, I'm just going on and on, aren't I?

Date: 2005-01-22 05:19 pm (UTC)Here's what comes up for Daniel:
"Although the name Daniel creates the urge to be reliable and responsible, we emphasize that it causes an emotional intensity that is hard to control. This name, when combined with the last name, can frustrate happiness, contentment, and success, as well as cause health weaknesses in the nervous system, worry, and mental tension.
Your name of Daniel has created a most expressive nature, idealistic and inspirational, driven with a strong inner urge to be of service in some way that would uplift humanity as a whole. However, there is a tendency to assume too heavy a burden of responsibility for others, which leads to worry and undue concern. People with problems are drawn to you as they recognize you as one who has understanding and gives not only sympathy and comfort but provides also some constructive advice or assistance. You have a generous quality to your nature, but you must guard carefully against giving more than you receive or you will find yourself doing without because you have helped someone else."
Pretty damn close, yes?

Date: 2005-01-22 07:04 pm (UTC)Sadly, the site is down at the moment, so I can't check Jack or Sam's names. It's about numbers or something. It's a lot of fun (when it was working).

Date: 2005-01-20 03:37 pm (UTC)But now with all these tv shows being produced on DVD, you can get them commercial-free. My sister is a big SG-1 fan, and I gave her the complete Season One DVD set for Christmas. It's actually wonderful because with all the seasons available, now I don't have to worry about what to buy her for her next couple of birthdays and Christmases. *g*
BTW, I love Joan of Arcadia. That's one show I hope they produce on DVD.

Date: 2005-01-20 06:45 pm (UTC)And word about JoA -- I want to see that on dvd. Mostly because I really want to see it and scheduling is not on my side (and I can't justify the purchase of something like TiVo for one show).

Date: 2005-01-20 06:43 pm (UTC)SG1 scheduling
Date: 2005-01-21 03:31 am (UTC)Since you must be on Eastern time, if you don't catch it at 8 PM, you can always catch it again at 11 PM, yes?
Re: SG1 scheduling
Date: 2005-01-21 07:52 pm (UTC)But yes, if you must use logic.
*grins*
Actually, it's really only an issue this particular week, because of the special at 7 p.m. (my vcr can't switch channels without me... it's complicated). And I think that this week might even be a rerun for JoA, which renders my entire annoyance rather irrelevant.
