Itemized Thoughts

butterflyItem One: So, a company named Six Apart bought LJ. Well, as long as they don't make me take down any content, I'm good with it.
Item Two: I had an odd experience the other night at work. Somehow, I got onto the subject of suicide with one of my managers. She apparently has a friend who has a brother who has been trying to kill himself. Actually, what he was doing sounded like SI, which is often accompanied by suicidal thoughts, but not always. It's definitely not the same thing, though. I was so nonplussed by getting a mini 'this is what suicidal people are like' lecture from said manager to point that out, though.
Plus, people get weird when you mention that you've had moments of serious suicidal inclination as well as a history in self-injury, so you'd actually know a little more than someone who has a friend's brother.
Item Three: Having a beta during the process of writing is really neat. I finally understand all those people who rave about how they couldn't have done ___ without their beta.
Item Four: Hercules: the Legendary Journeys may, in fact, be the cheesiest show in existence. I've started watching it from the beginning (via netflix, of course) and wow. The cheese. This show beats out Smallville. And it has so many wonderfully bad extras. I didn't know there were that many bad actors in the world. Michael Hurst is very cool, though. He's always the most interesting thing on the screen. Even when he isn't there.
Item Five: The dates for the 2005 VividCon are set. I've already marked it on my calendar. I'm eagerly waiting for registration to open up.
Item Six: And still more people keep flooding into the Stargate fandom. I'm starting to feel Old Skool and I saw my first episode in May of 2004, people. It's incredibly cool. More people should succumb to Stargate as it utterly rules.

Date: 2005-01-07 05:26 am (UTC)I would like to issue the caveat that they have to be part of the fandom for at least three days before they start talking about how it's the wankiest fandom ever and by the way the fic sucks, though. Mostly because this is a safe space in which me to vent my irritation. Why do I go onto friendsfriends? Why? It never ends well.

Date: 2005-01-07 08:20 am (UTC)The best thing about Hercules was the spinoff Xena, otherwise I watch certain episodes for cool characters such as Callisto, Ares and Bruce Campbell's Autolycus, King of Thieves.
The first episode that Xena appears in has to be the slashiest thing that ever slashed (Hercules/Iolaus), so nobody should have been surprised with how damn slashy Xena turned out to be.
My enjoyment of Hercules is restricted by what an asshat Kevin Sorbo is, if you ever get time dig up what he said in an interview about the Xena series, talk about serious sour grapes and the things I read about him in Andromeda doesn't endear me to the man.

But the repeating extras I find somewhat amusing :) And they certainly trained up a lot of them for Lord of the Rings.

Date: 2005-01-09 01:27 am (UTC)And, of course, Stargate is really just typical when it comes to wank. Yes, it had Save Daniel Jackson, but in Dawson's Creek people sent stuff in so that they could get their preferred romance in the end (Joey/Pacey, all the way! True love! *cough* Sorry.).
Harry Potter has the plagarism wank, Lord of the Rings has the tinhats, Buffy has Spike vs Angel, Souled!Spike vs Murdering!Bastard!Spike, Damnit! Xander lied to Buffy in Becoming and deserves to be hated!, and the eternal 'Is Buffy is a complete bitch?' argument. due South had the Ray Wars, which were incredibly vicious.
Fandom is inherently wanky. Anything is when you bring together a large amount of people who have a great deal of passion, because they never have exactly the same kind of passion for the same sort of things.
The wankiest fandom that I've been in has probably been Jossverse.

The two series don't crossover often.
