The thing that made me think of it directly was seeing a female AU Daniel in a fic. I remember going -- wow, that's an interesting idea. I'd love to see what it would be like to have an AU-female Daniel (I soon decided on the name Abigail) interact with our crew.

aelora's 'girl!Clark' series, with Hudson/Lex. Changing one thing changes quite a bit -- I'm also trying to make sure that I only change things that would change with the switch in gender. I want everyone else to be the same, up to the point where that would effect them. Sam was still in the military in Abigail's world, Charlie still died, etc. Because most people do not react the same to women as they do men. Abigail is not Daniel in a large part because her personality was shaped by those differing reactions.
At the same time, I picked what I felt were 'core Jackson values', things that wouldn't change with the gender-flip, such as the lack of self-preservation instincts. That's totally a family trait.
