So, Canada's Supreme Court has ruled that "proposed legislation legalizing same-sex marriage is constitutional". In six out of ten provinces and one of the three territories, gay marriage is already legal. There's also an article about Canada here (articles spotted on [livejournal.com profile] the_star_fish's journal).

I'll be off in the corner marking down another reason why Canada is my favorite country in the world.

Last seen at [livejournal.com profile] velvetglove's LJ.

1. MP3 player on random
2. Pick favorite lines from first 25 songs that play.
3. Post and let friends list guess the song titles

And I went ahead and skipped to the next song if I'd already had the singer in an earlier song. So, there are no artist repeats.

1. And then fire shot down from the sky in bolts, like shining blades of a knife.
Correctly guessed by [livejournal.com profile] silly_cleo as Origin of Love from Hedwig and the Angry Inch. (This is from the Hedwig version -- I personally prefer Tommy Gnosis' version later in the play/movie.).

2. Yeah, you bleed just to know you're alive.
Correctly guessed by [livejournal.com profile] silly_cleo as Iris by the Goo Goo Dolls. The version that I have on my computer is the acoustic, which I love so much. So much.

3. Illusion never changed into something real.
Correctly guessed by [livejournal.com profile] ilanabean42 as Torn by Natalie Imbruglia. This song was part of the massive Natalie download that I did a few months ago.

4. I crawled out of the world and you said I shouldn't stay.
Correctly guessed by [livejournal.com profile] sparklyfabulous as Blue by Angie Hart. As mentioned by sf, this song aired in the BtVS episode Conversations with Dead People. The version that I have on my computer is the full version, not the one that aired on the show.

5. No, I'd rather walk a windy road, rather know the things I know, see the world with my own eyes -- no regrets, no looking back, no good-byes.
Correctly guessed by [livejournal.com profile] silly_cleo as A Place Called Home by Kim Richey. I first heard the song on Angel and fell in love. Beautiful song.

6. Please don't forget my past -- the future looks bright ahead.

7. It's my mouth that pushes out this breath.
Correctly guessed by [livejournal.com profile] ivy03 as Fumbling Towards Ecstasy by Sarah McLachlan. I have so many of her songs on my computer that I was getting them quite a bit of the time. She's part of the reason for my 'no repeat artists' rule. Love her. She's gotten a bit of play on BtVS and due South. Incidentally? She's Canadian.

8. This is the noise that keeps me awake -- my head explodes and my body aches.
Correctly guessed by [livejournal.com profile] sockkpuppett as Push It by Garbage. I can never keep still when I play this song -- it always makes me want to move.

9. J'ai souvent rêvé dans les bras de Marius d'être à sa place devant ce bonheur d'un autre monde.
Correctly guessed (or, rather, close enough) by [livejournal.com profile] ilanabean42 as L'Un Vers L'Autre from the French version of Les Miserables. The English equivalent is On My Own, though they don't actually sound much alike at all. They do both kick ass, though. I like the French version a tiny bit more.

10. Things aren't the way they were before -- you wouldn't even recognize me anymore.
Correctly guessed by [livejournal.com profile] lasheremaleth as In the End by Linkin Park. Incidentally, I once saw a very good Tidus (Final Fantasy X) vid to this song.

11. Here is a fruit for the crows to pluck, for the rain to gather, for the wind to suck, for the sun to rot, for the trees to drop -- here is a strange and bitter crop.
Correctly guessed by [livejournal.com profile] dearladydisdain as Strange Fruit by Billie Holiday. Tough, classy lady. The song is about lynching -- murdered blacks are the 'strange fruit' in the song.

12. You may hear angels cheer because we're together.
Correctly guessed by [livejournal.com profile] lexsboo as Come Fly With Me. Frank Sinatra's is the most well-known version of the song, but the version I was listening to was by a newish artist named Michael Buble. Very nice, old-fashioned voice.

13. Be sure you try to climb before you get too scared you'll fall.

14. I know how to make you forget her.
Correctly guessed by [livejournal.com profile] lexsboo as I Can Love You Better by the Dixie Chicks. They're such a sprightly trio. I like them quite a bit.

15. You took for granted all the times I never let you down.
Correctly guessed by [livejournal.com profile] ilanabean42 as Kryptonite by 3 Doors Down. This song is a favorite of mine, at least in part because of [livejournal.com profile] jmtorres's kick-ass Rhade/Dylan (Andromeda) vid to it.

16. It's real talking -- why not make him wait for you?
Correctly guessed by [livejournal.com profile] brooding_soul as Dip It Low by Christina Milian. I recently listened to a bunch of her songs and this was the only one that I liked enough to keep.

17. I am one of those melodramatic fools, neurotic to the bone, no doubt about it.
Correctly guessed by [livejournal.com profile] ilanabean42 as Basket Case by Green Day. I first heard this song attached to a hilarious Lana vid. It was really, really funny.

18. I focus on the pain -- the only thing that's real.
Correctly guessed by [livejournal.com profile] ilanabean42 as Hurt. The version that I have on my computer is Nine Inch Nails -- a version by Johnny Cash played in the Smallville episode Shattered.

19. I wanna take you for granted.
Correctly guessed by [livejournal.com profile] belated_fangirl as Push by Matchbox 20. Like with Iris, the version that I have on my computer is the acoustic.

20. But I thought the world needed love and a steady hand, so I'm steady now.
Correctly guessed by [livejournal.com profile] silly_cleo as If I Wrote You by Dar Williams. This song was actually recc'ed to me on lj, though I don't remember who linked to it.

21. And I have to speculate that God himself did make us into corresponding shapes like puzzle pieces from the clay.
Correctly guessed by [livejournal.com profile] sparklyfabulous as Such Great Heights by the Postal Service. This is another of the songs that I was pointed to by my flist. It delights me.

22. She was gonna shake her ass on the hood of Whitesnake's car.
Correctly guessed by [livejournal.com profile] crimsonhue as 1985 by Bowling for Soup. One of the very few songs that I was introduced to by listening to the radio. It's just a lot of fun.

23. But he stayed in the city, kept on changing clothes in dirty old phonebooths till his work was through, and nothing to do but go on home.
Correctly guessed by [livejournal.com profile] deifire as Superman's Song by the Crash Test Dummies. This song is featured in the pilot movie for due South and it makes me all gooey with adoration for Benton Fraser.

24. And I'll remind you of the truth and keep the flame alive in you.

25. I'm riding a camel that has big eyes.
Correctly guessed by [livejournal.com profile] lasheremaleth as Sugar Water by Cibo Matto. It amazes me that a song with such hilariously and brilliantly silly lyrics can manage to be erotic, but this song definitely is -- this was the song for Buffy and Xander's sexy dance in When She was Bad.

Canada is my second favorite to NZ cuz NZ just passed a Civil Union bill effective in April, plus I can live here. ;)

1. Is that Origin of Love, Hedwig and the Angry Inch?

2. Goo Goo Dolls, Iris

5. Kim Richey, A Place Called Home. Waaaah.

20. AGH, I know this one! I also totally love it. Gah. oh! Dar Williams, If I Wrote You. For reasons logical only to me, this is my Fred/Wesley song.

And 3 sounds familiar. i wanna know what all the others are!

I may have to do this meme, it's such fun.

Yeah, I thought so too. It's the first thing my mother told me when I got here. ;) Apparently where she lives has been described as a hotbed for fundamentalist Christians or something like that though.

The main difference, though, is that Canada (and the Canadian government) is vehemently opposed to civil unions. (Link (http://canada.justice.gc.ca/en/news/fs/2004/doc_31348.html).) Because "civil unions are a relationship short of marriage" and thus are not equal to marriage. Because:
The only reason for promoting civil unions is to restrict marriage to opposite-sex couples and deny it to same-sex couples. That is unconstitutional and in direct contradiction to [the right to equality].
Civil unions are discriminatory as they *deny* same sex couples full rights by granting them partial rights. Civil unions are not to be lauded as the ideal: if you believe that gay people ought to be treated equally, then the reasonable course of action is to grant equality.

I would definitely agree with that. I'm tending more and more towards not wanting compromises when they still mean that there's unequal treatment involved.
