Mal/Inara; Stargate story idea
Nov. 19th, 2004 02:31 pmFirst off, I posted my Mal/Inara essay, Broken Angels (Hallelujah) to
ship_manifesto.
Secondly, I have this story idea for SG-1 that's bugging me. It's an AU-story, with two points of view -- Jack and the AU version of Daniel. The idea is to have Jack's POV in the main story and then to have links on certain words. When you click on the words, a pop-up window will appear with a flashback to the AU, thus shedding light on the AU character's background (the pop-up windows idea was utterly and completely stolen from
cesperanza, who didn't do that in Kowalski is Bleeding, but who mentioned the idea in her commentary for the story). Story would have both slash and het elements in the end, probably.
"Unscheduled Off-World Activation!"
Jack looked up from his paperwork, his mind going through the possibilities as he made his way to the gateroom. They currently had eleven teams off-world and no one was scheduled for a check-in for several hours.
When he got to the gateroom, the tech had already received the IDC. "It's Doctor Jackson, sir."
A day before scheduled. With Daniel, that usually meant that the worst had happened. Jack made an impatient gesture, and the iris slid open. Half a minute later, a figure stumbled through, and the SFs were pointing their guns. The wormhole closed soon after -- no one had followed.
Jack called out to the SFs to hold their fire, but didn't tell them to stand down.
That wasn't Daniel.
The traveler was a woman, one who'd obviously recently been in a battle zone. She had shoulder-length blond hair, part of it still in a ponytail, the rest dangling around her face, which was streaked with dust and ash and dotted with small cuts. She wore a SG uniform, though he couldn't see the number from his angle. She didn't look frightened at all, holding up her hands before being asked and looking around as if curious.
Jack leaned closer to the microphone. "Identify yourself."
At the sound of his voice, the woman glanced up, and she smiled, clear joy all over her face, her gaze meeting his, eyes so intense that he could see the blue from the control room. "Jack?"
He'd never met her before, he was sure of it, but when she said his name, it was almost familiar, the sound of someone who knew him. "Identify yourself," he repeated. "And explain where you got that iris code."
The woman bit her lip, shrugging a little. "My name is Doctor Abigail Jackson." Jack inclined his head slightly, encouraging her to continue. Her voice echoed in the otherwise silent room. "I used my personal IDC and I'm shocked that it worked. Sam had a theory..." The woman -- Abigail -- trailed off, her expression darkening. "She thought that because I'm still Doctor Jackson, that the code should translate across. She was right."
Jack shook his head, feeling a depressing familiar sense of confusion. "Which means?"
"Jack," she kept her eyes on his, still and almost solemn. "I'm from an alternate reality. My name is Doctor Abigail Jackson. I've come seeking asylum."
Which would be linked from the word 'theory':
"The mirror is capable of tapping into literally any kind of reality that we could imagine and an infinite number that we could never predict," Sam said, reading over the specs for the mirror again. She'd done that so many times over the course of these experiments that Abigail found it hard to believe that Sam hadn't memorized the thing already.
"But, in theory, the universes that come up first should be close to ours." Abigail said, frowning. "So, why am I male in every reality that we've seen? Shouldn't those possibilities be further away?"
"Not necessarily." Sam turned towards Abigail, her eyes lighting up as she thought out loud. "If the you in this universe has consistently made choices that are more like those of the male Doctor Jacksons and if everything else in the universe is more closely aligned, there's no reason why it should make a difference."
Abigail pulled off her glasses and rubbed her eyes. "And why did that other Doctor Jackson's code work on our iris?"
"Chaos theory might help explain that," Sam said, pulling up a new page. Abigail looked over at it and parted her lips in shock as she noticed the time.
"It's nine already," she said, a knot forming in her stomach. "I told Jack I'd be there by eight."
Sam looked over at her, realization dawning in her eyes. "That's today?"
Abigail nodded, pulling away from Sam. She still had to run to her lab, grab a few things. "We'll talk later," she promised Sam before darting out the door.

Date: 2005-01-09 02:40 am (UTC)I should've done this ages ago since I love visiting your LJ every so often and just binging on your posts (*g*) but anyway, mind if I friend you? Your brain is entirely yummy :)

Date: 2005-01-10 04:27 pm (UTC)It's been going really well so far. I've never been a distance writer, as it were -- I generally get an idea and then just write it and post it, all in one big swoop. But I'm already over seven-thousand words on this story, counting both sides. If you want to check out the story as is, it's up here (http://dianamichelle.5u.com/analysis/stargate/fanfic/au.html), where I'm updating it whenever I get a new section back from beta -- it's so I won't need to do all the work of hooking up the AU sections when I've finished the story. The story, of course, isn't actually connected to anything on my site yet.
