SG-1 -- On a Casting Spoiler
May. 14th, 2005 09:47 amSo, on occasion I go over to Our Stargate because a) once in a while they say something deep and interesting (really, it's true) and b) if that doesn't happen, I can always end up staring at the screen wondering what show they're actually watching and I've reached a secure point in my love where I'm fine with that. The hate doesn't touch my love.
Anyway, my current bafflement is over the bashing of Lexa Doig's acting -- they lumped her in with Vanessa Angel. Dude, Lexa consistently played three variations on her character in every episode (five in the first season finale) and I've long been impressed by her acting. I was being impressed by Lexa's acting before I even knew that Michael existed. Plus, she is absolutely gorgeous, in a way that comes across as completely natural. And the way they just say "Oh, another stupid bad actress," you get the idea that they haven't seen her act at all.
Prejudice is a really ugly thing, no matter where you find it, I suppose.
An idea is just an idea -- whether it comes off well depends entirely on the people implementing it. Ben Browder is a strong actor, so he'll probably be able to overcome the sometimes weak writing on SG-1. Ditto with Claudia, and I am so thrilled that she's playing Vala and not an Aeryn clone. I hated Aeryn. I like Claudia a lot more when she's playing a funny character (the episode where I liked Aeryn best was Crackers Don't Matter, when she was wacky). And Lexa Doig is a very strong actor, too. I kept watching Andromeda for as long as I did because the acting was so strong, but they had Kevin Sorbo instead of RDA and I got so tired of the captain doing all the chicks -- I think that I snapped when he macked on the mentally ill woman.

Date: 2005-05-14 04:57 pm (UTC)Never saw Farscape or Andromeda, so can't comment there. I'm mostly of the opinion that, if we can get more female characters onto Stargate SG-1, there is no bad there. I think Sam works best of all when she's playing against other female characters, so I'd love to see her interact with Vala and the new CMO.

Date: 2005-05-17 09:39 pm (UTC)It really isn't easy at all. Lexa managed to keep all three distinct and yet clearly the same personality.
