Vampire Diaries: genetics of the supernatural

I don't know if everyone who is currently following me was around when I originally geeked out on how insanely much more sense TVD vampires make, biologically, than ever other vampire ever. Obviously, there is still some magic handwaving going on, but there's quite a bit that's standing on solid ground.
