Movies: 'Rent' and 'Jarhead'
Nov. 25th, 2005 03:47 amI saw both of these last night, one after the other (deal with the roommate -- I agreed to see Jarhead if she'd see Rent.). Quite a switch, though I was vastly amused to note that both movies take place in the 1989-1990 time frame. Also, both of them are extremely gay movies. Rent is, well, Rent, and Jarhead is a damn blunt and upfront military movie, and the military is one of those intensely homosocial environments. And when I say 'blunt', I mean that Jarhead is a movie that has earned its 'R' rating, so I give it a cautious recommendation. It's a good movie, but definitely not for everyone -- two groups of people in the theater we were watching it in left and stayed gone at two different points.
I really liked both of them, and both of them left with me this itch to read slash that doesn't exist, at least not in the kind of quantity and quality that I'm aching for at the moment.
To go against everything that I've seen people say so far: I adore Roger's hair in this. It gives him more of a contrast with Mark's spiked up blonde look, and I like longer hair on a man who can pull it off, and I really think that he pulled it off. He was hot, and growly, and sexy. I enjoyed muchly.
Seeing April was nifty-keen, and I loved Angel/Collins and Maureen/Joanne as much as I always do. I bought the Roger/Mimi relationship, which was nice. And I was able to indulge my Roger/Mark slashy side, since the actors were very satisfactorily sparky together, as I'd really hoped they would be, considering the 'original cast' thing. And Collins was intensely hot, as was Joanne. Mark (Anthony Rapp) is so thin! I really could believe that he'd been broke and starving (and considering that the camera adds weight...). I wanted to give him some sort of food before he passed out or something. Adorably dorky, too.
And while I love the play (which is a large part of why I went to see the movie), I really adore the idea of there existing a legal copy that will be able to be owned and that can be kept. I'm really fond of my dvd collection. I'm looking forward to being able to have Rent there. And that so many of them are people who were in the original cast... I didn't even know Rent existed when the original cast when in it, so to see their chemistry, to see why it worked right from the start, that was really neat.

Date: 2005-11-25 10:23 pm (UTC)I really liked the changes that they made for Rent -- they changed some of the lyrics to spoken lines, made the first act take place over a couple of days instead, and it's way easier to do a 'time passes' montage on film than on the stage.
