butterfly: (Blue Sun -- Firefly (by domestik_diva))

Having a six day work-week this... week. I'm just starting the middle, but the tiredness has begun already.

Still working on the current WR chapter, but my head is full of Firefly, so it's simply harder to stay in Luke's head. I love these characters, so I cannot be putting Jossian quips into their mouths, as that's not who they are. But that's why it's taking extra-long, because I want to make sure I stay in Lucas' universe.

I'm not expecting my Serenity giddy joy to go away any time soon. Big Damn Movie, people. Were people begrudging the Farscape folk their miniseries? If so, I missed it.

Seriously, what is up with the recent fannish backlash against acting fannishly? It's not just Serenity, I've seen other things ragged on in the past few. I mean, I don't watch Veronica Mars, but I've got this real handy ability to scroll past VM posts on my flist. Sometimes there are several in a row. This doesn't affect my non-desire to see the show one way or another. The only thing that does get me annoyed about such things is when there are negative comparisions thrown about.

Like, say, one thing I've seen recently (on TWoP, so I don't take it all that seriously) is to say how BSG is so much better at continuity than Joss (to which I say, pull the other one, it's got bells on. BSG is not beyond Making Shit Up On The Spot. One word, people -- Helo.). Dude, I love BSG, I love Joss. Stop trying to pull a Papa Adama and make me pick sides, because, push comes to shove, I'd be on Roslin's Joss', and I don't think that's the response they're going for, there. The thing that put me off Batman Begins was not the hype, but the amount of people who were all, "This is so much better than that other thing". Yeah, that's the way to reach people who liked that other thing.

Word.

And -- did I do that? Please tell me I didn't to that.

Hmm, the BB thing, you mean? Not so I remember. Of course, I don't remember names, so it's possible. But it was a general thing that was happening at that time on my flist.

I'm glad you're still working on WR, my big worry was that you'd be so inspired by Serenity that you'd go onto other projects and leave everything Star Wars-related on permanent hiatus. I'd understand, of course, and I'm the last one to demand that a fan finishes their fanworks, but... I'd have been disapointed. XD;

Seriously, what is up with the recent fannish backlash against acting fannishly?

Is there a backlash? The down-button works mighty fine, and the day I get to watch Serenity myself I plan to gorge myself on all the Serenity/Firefly tags available on my flist.

I can't say as to how long the next chapter will take, but I definitely want to finish the story. I'm still pretty Serenity-focused at the moment, though.

Hmm I think I might be quilty of comparing Serenity to other movies myself. The only fannish backlash I've heard or seen was for the online reviewers. Apparently there were some nasty emails sent to the reviewers, who actually liked the movie. Puzzled by this.

I don't know why people are comparing Joss's works to BSG...they are completely different shows. Oh well I enjoy Joss's works and BSG myself.

I think the only reason I felt negative towards Star Wars (the new trilogy) is because I really loved the first trilogy and high hopes for the new trilogy, and each new movie dissapointed me (though after the Phantom Menace, my expectations did go down a lot)

I know you're a fan of the last movie and I know a lot of other new trilogy fans, so I'm not going to say anything more beyond that.

But you do have a point when you say that the best way to get people to watch the show isn't necessarily to compare it to a show you don't like, because there's a good chance the person might have liked the show you just put down.

I went back and read my movie squeeing and realized I do sometimes put down movies I didn't like when I'm talking about a movie I enjoy. Never really thought about it before your post. This is something I'm going to try changing. Of course the first step is awareness.

I actually do think that they both feature very realistic characterization, but I feel that this should not be considered a special thing. All shows should have it, in my way of thinking. But most don't, so the ones that do stand out. But Joss' voice is just so distinctive that I really can't understand comparing it to anything else.

I didn't understand where the aggressivity - because some of those posts were downright aggressive to me - regarding the whole Serenity fannish activies came from. I mean, just because there were more people raving about it shouldn't have made a difference with all the fannish squee that is going on all the time on LJ. Of course I understand that those who don't give a shit about the show or the movie might have found those posts boring and even a tad annoying - but, that happens! What's up with being insulting towards people who were enjoying themselves so much?

Also, more stupid/stupider to me was the whole "stop pressuring us into seeing the movie" because really, what's up with that? Just because lot of people rave about something doesn't mean they're trying to omg force others to do anything. That seriously baffled me.

So yes, I do understand how annoying it must have been for some people, but getting insulting was really not the solution.

Yeah, I just didn't get how some people were pissed off at fan for being fannish. That's what we do.

See, I have never gotten this attitude. Way back when the Star Trek vs. Star Wars... wars were going strong, I was always looking at both warring factions and wondering why it was considered impossible to like both, since I did.

And heck, it's easy as pie to scroll past squee for stuff I don't like; I do it all the time. I don't know what these people's problem is. Well. I know for at least some of them it's because they've developed a deep and abiding hatred for All Things Joss because He Ruined Buffy by Leaving It in the Hands of The Evil Marti Noxon for Firefly. *snort* Whatever.

Yes, I never understood either why I have to take sides in fandom. It used to be Star Trek against Star Wars, Star Wars against the LOTR movies, Harry Potter against LOTR and a zillion other combinations.
Quite frankly I enjoy a great many fandoms in very different ways and I enjoy being fannish.
I always find it sad when you have to defend yourself for getting a kick out of something and analysing/posting about it - or just simply going "squeeee" with delight. :-)

Ah, yes, I love it when people do that, and then they also forget all the wonderful things that Marti Noxon did on the shows (she wrote one of my favorite lines of dialogue ever -- "God doesn't want you, but I still do." That line still gives me shivers, man.).

Love the metaphor, and love the sentiment! Keep on refusing to play the "your fandom wears army boots" game.

Oh, I wish "Serenity" was already in cinemas over here, but it's nearly 2 months of wait yet.

I hope that WR will not entirely forgotten, because I'd love to see how what will happen in the next chapters. I can entirely understand, of course, that right you're focused on Firefly. I'd would be the same for me.

Because Firefly is just that damn cool.

I do love SW, but I'm word-geek at heart, and nobody writes quite like Joss. He's the Man, man.
