So, obviously Shaw’s escape emotionally overshadows everything else that happened the last couple of nights (\O/), and I’m certain I’m going to reblog tons of gifsets about it, but there was a lot of information about how Samaritan thinks vs how the Machine thinks in the last couple of episodes and that was pretty fascinating, too.
5x06 - A More Perfect Union
The first half of the episode seemed a bit slow to me – I swear that John and Harold do the exact same exposition scene twice. But it really starts to pick up at the midway point and by the time the episode ended, I was really emotionally engaged. The scene at the end, where they’re watching the wedding dance and thinking about what they’ve lost, is really touching. But, for me, the real meat of this week was in last night’s episodes.
5x07 - QSO
I think this is the first time we’ve seen the Machine’s PoV on how and why it changes Root’s identifies, which was fascinating. But one of the big things that stood out to me here (after I watched the next episode) is the big comparison between the way TM operates and the way Samaritan does – free will. The team saves the number but when he chooses to go back into danger, knowing the risks, she still marks off their mission as ‘complete’ because he has the right to risk his life if he freely chooses to do so. Of course, this contrasts with how the team is not allowing Fusco to make that same choice. They’re lying to him to ‘protect’ him but he’s still in danger, he’s just in danger without being allowed to know exactly what the danger is.
We also had both Samaritan and Root ‘breaking through’ to Shaw – Samaritan destroyed her faith in her ability to tell fake apart from real but, before she could make the decision in real life that she’s made in simulation after simulation, Root gives her hope by sending a message that she immediately knows is real and that means that her family is still out there trying to reach her.
5x08 - Reassortment
So, in QSO, we get a good look at what the Machine thinks about people and their choices, and how much she respects free will, and in Reassortment, we see exactly how little Samaritan respects humans and why it’s had such a hard time trying to win or break Shaw.
TM accepts people as they are and does her best to save as many lives as possible while still respecting free will. This has lead to her having a small but extremely talented set of teammates. Samaritan, on the other hand, filters. It sets up a series of tests in order to weed through humanity to find people who are already susceptible to its arguments and its belief sets or vulnerable to blackmail or threats. Which is all well and good if you have the entire mass of humanity to sift through – if the guy this week hadn’t been willing to do the mission, Samaritan would have just found someone else.
But that doesn’t work when you actually need a
specific person, not just a person with certain traits. They don’t need someone ‘like’ Shaw to find the Machine, they need Shaw herself, accept no substitutes. And that’s where the filtering system breaks down. And Samaritan has no idea how to actually formulate a persuasive argument against an opposing belief set – it’s never needed to. When it woke up, it was told that it was in charge and that its will would be done. Greer came to it already on its side. And when it’s needed people for a specific task, it filters until it finds someone who is already prepared to accept its arguments. This is a huge weak spot and I think (hope?) that Shaw is going to be able to tell them about it.
