Hi semi-anon! Your email actually showed up in your submission-post in my inbox, but I’m not sure if you’re comfortable with me using that, so I’m going to stick with ‘anon’ for now.

 

Yeah, there’s a lot of stuff that happens later in the series that balances out my initial reaction to the John-Jess set-up – the fact that Harold’s loss that started him on the path was his dear friend and not his love interest (who is alive and well), the way that Cole dies basically to start Shaw on her path to being Team Machine, and then the later details about what happened to Jess all combine to form a much more complete and complex picture. Loss and the fear of loss and what loss does to a person are a huge part of the themes of the series, which means that Jess’s death is never just backstory but continues to be an active part of that theme going forward.

re: John Riley and S4

I actually think there are a lot of ways the Riley plot makes tons of narrative sense, though I’ll get to that more when I get there. I don’t like Riley as much as I like Reese, but John doesn’t like him as much either, and I feel, in general, like that’s the main point. I feel like the Riley plot was always leading up to Terra Incognita (or something similar), where John nearly gets himself killed going it alone because he’s decided to view being Riley as a way to honor Carter’s memory.

The Iris subplot is probably my least favorite part of the Riley plot, because it’s a very unethical and toxic relationship and also they don’t have much chemistry – which is accentuated by John spending time with Zoe and Frankie (both of whom he had much better chemistry with) right before the Iris-John situation goes critical – which I was talking to a friend about and I mentioned that one of the reasons I feel that John has more chemistry with Zoe and Frankie is, basically, because he’s John Reese with them rather than John Riley. The only time he starts to even show a hint of being John Reese around Iris is in their last conversation in S4, when he’s warning her to get out of the city before the shit hits the fan.

I have TONS of thoughts on the John Riley plotline, tbh, but I will expand on them more when I get to that part of my rewatch. The main thrust of the plotline, though, is how ill-suited John is for the role – he never becomes a great cop; even in the last episodes of S4, if I recall correctly, everyone is still going ‘omg you are such a shitty cop, John’ (or the even more damning ‘lol you’re not a cop, what are you?’) and they are all completely right. Which is why it’s so rewarding when John gets to be John Reese in the S4 finale. Because that’s what he’s good at.
