It’s been interesting to me to see how many people see the Dean/Gadreel/Sam scenes in 9x01 as fundamentally different than the church scenes in 8x23, because I see a lot of similarities (which is probably why I wasn’t surprised when Sam linked the two scenes together in this week’s episode).

Both scenes are about the fundamental issues that have made the Winchester brotherhood such a bloody mess – Dean’s inability to let go of Sam and Sam choosing to trust his brother over trusting himself. Dean can’t respect the idea that Sam has the right to make his own moral choices and own his own agency, and Sam has believed that Dean is fundamentally morally ‘correct’ in a way that he himself is incapable of because he’s a 'freak’, and so Sam cedes the moral high ground to Dean.

While there were self-worth issues involved in Sam being willing to die to help protect the world, that doesn’t negate that Sam was… willing to die to help protect the world. Dean can respect when other people do this, but Sam he says, 'no’. Don’t do this. He points out all the things he’s given up and is willing to give up for Sam, and then tells Sam not to sacrifice himself for the world. Sam listens.

Then, again in 9x01, Sam was willing to accept a straight-forward death – even adding in the condition that he never wants to be the cause of future evil and death in other people’s lives – but 'Dean’ asks him not to, so Sam gives a blank check of a 'yes’ purely on what he believes to be Dean’s request.

I guess one place where I differ with some people is that I don’t think Sam understands 'healthy’ relationships anymore than Dean does. Neither of them have a ton of experience in the area. Sam can’t explain exactly what’s wrong and what he wants because he’s only recently come to understand it himself and he needs time to find the right words. He’s pinpointed the source of the problem – that they use the word 'family’ to excuse a lot of horrible choices – and he wants to fix it. He doesn’t want to leave Dean the way that he needed to leave John (to protect himself and his agency). He loves his brother and wants to fix things. But Sam doesn’t have a magic decoder ring. It’s hard for him to articulate this stuff, too.

They managed to bridge this gap once, at the very end of S5, but then that growth was undercut by Sam coming back 'wrong’ and in such need of Dean’s moral compass. And so they’ve been struggling with that issue ever since.
