butterflySo, my overall reaction was – Nice Job Breaking It, Hero.
Literally everyone warned you and you bulled ahead anyway and you’ve brought the ancient evil that corrupted Lucifer into the world. A+ work. Stellar job. Yeah, you’re definitely the heroes of this story.
(I also suspect that Rowena had an idea of what removing the Mark would do – at least once she got her hands on the codex)
They started with “Carry On Wayward Son” from 10x05. That gave me feels.
Ah, the fan-favorite that died was Death. I feel like that should be ironic but I’m not sure whether or not it actually is. I’m sad Crowley’s still alive, gonna be honest. Hopefully, he’ll die in 11x01, fingers crossed. Rowena, however, got to saunter away triumphant (if a bit saddened by her own necessary sacrifice) and I congratulate her and her awesome accent and dresses for it.
Overall – current Dean is acting a lot like late-season S9 Dean mixed with a bit of demon!Dean. I never was concerned for a second that he’d physically hurt Crystal (though he had no issue emotionally scarring her or being a sexist ass in the earlier scene) – both MoC and demon!Dean retained elements of Dean’s own moral lines. Rudy, though, as a hunter, fell into ‘non-civilian’ territory and Dean found it easier (in the moment) to write him off. Dean, in all his incarnations, holds very strongly to that civilian vs non-civilian line.
Cas needs to stop falling in with charismatic people who lead him wrong. Of course, we’ve moved from him doing so in order to save ‘the world’ or ‘heaven’ and progressed to him doing it ‘for Dean’.
Though, actually, that brings me to a greater point re: the Carver seasons. During the Apocalypse seasons, the general good could be conflated with the ‘Winchester good’. The people they loved ultimately died in order to help save the world. But now, they’re just dying to help save the Winchesters, and the world is actively put in danger by the Winchesters being saved. The goals – save the world; save the Winchesters – are opposed. The Winchesters are an element of damnation, not salvation (which is to say, Dean was 100% correct in the conversation with Sam, not that it did any good, since he couldn’t or wouldn’t stick the landing – that said, he continued to upturn Cain’s prophecy point-by-point: he didn’t kill Crowley, then he didn’t kill Cas, and finally he didn’t kill Sam).
We see this in S8, when saving Sam means leaving the gates open and damning countless innocent people. In S9, when Dean saving Sam costs Kevin’s life. And now in S10, where Dean’s salvation costs Charlie, an innocent life, and letting a powerful darkness into the world. No price is too high, even if that price is literally everyone else in the world. The darkness is the Winchesters; they are the source of toxin covering the world. Actual villains have done less damage to the world than the Winchesters have done, at this point.
(I am sad that I didn’t post my “I bet Death tells Dean to kill Sam” spec before the episode aired! Because I was right! But I didn’t post it before the episode aired! Sadness! But, yeah, I basically was going to say, “If I were Death, I’d tell Dean to kill Sam, because both of them out of the picture is the only way to end the cycle at this point”. But, alas, I did not post.)
