Okay, before I get to the rest – hello, reverse!crypt scene that every Destiel person knew was gonna happen. Down to the person involved stopping their violence against that specific person but still leaving rather than sticking around. Dramatically-speaking, you did not disappoint. Cas talking about how even if Dean resists the Mark for centuries, Cas will still be around to watch him become everything he hates. I just. Cas. How in the end, it’s such a heartbreaking, violent, painful moment in both 8x17 and here.
Now, back to the start:
“Dean, you’re all I’ve got. So, of course, I was gonna fight for you because that’s what we do. Listen, I had a shot-” Sam says, as they stand in front of the burning corpse of their friend who literally gave her life for them. Wow. Wow. Wow. Like, even if Dean hadn’t already been pissed to the max, that would have done it. The… the blatant disregard for Charlie as an important person to their family. Sam can say he won’t forgive himself for Charlie’s death, but even at her funeral, he doesn’t include her as someone that he had in his life to care about. Just Dean. That’s why he didn’t see what a dangerous position he was putting her in last episode. Because he didn’t see Charlie at all, all he saw was Dean.
I pointed this out back in 10x05 when Sam and Dean were watching the musical and Sam approved of the ‘just the two of us’ sentiment – that the bleak look in Dean’s eyes was because he’s realized that this ‘just the two of us’ deal is something that occurs because everyone else important to them keeps dying. Dean has (finally, finally, finally) realized that the ‘just us’ attitude means everyone else gets hurt, that everyone else is treated like they don’t matter as much. That everyone else ultimately becomes expendable*.
“Shut it down before someone else gets hurt.” Because that’s the thing. The Winchester code that means ‘we save each other no matter what’ has turned into something that means ‘we save each other no matter who else might get hurt’. And that’s wrong. It’s morally wrong.
But Sam is not there. He knows that this killed Charlie; Dean has told him to stop before anyone else gets hurt, but the second he realizes it’s a viable option again, he immediately restarts the plan.
So, Silas – Dean in Hell, am I right? Literally given the option between cutting up someone else or being carved up himself. And, in a more metaphorical way, Silas was Dean and Sam in the Winchester family – they had to give up who they were as individuals in order to be Winchesters.
I am going to have so many more thoughts on this episode (including both wanting to cry and smack Andrew Dabb for the Charlie tribute at the beginning) but I want to read other people’s thoughts now, so I’m gonna post and head over to my dash.
Rowena remains a delight. I do have more thoughts about the Crowley stuff, too, but I want to think about some of it more.
* It’s an interesting contrast to Cas’s words to Dean at the end of the episode, which also are tinged with ‘I would be there because everyone else would be dead’ but there is, of course, a striking difference between everyone else dying because it’s been hundreds of years as opposed to everyone else dying to keep them alive.
