spn 10x03 - soul survivor
Oct. 21st, 2014 04:18 pmGot a chance to watch this on the livestream tonight. <3
First off - congrats to the meta people who called the Lester-Sam plotline! I thought it made a lot of sense when people said it, so I was pleased to see that it was what happened.
(pleased on a thematic level; not so pleased at Sam himself)
And Dean very accurately made a comparison between Sam and Crowley there, didn’t he? Take a man at his lowest and convince him to sign away his life and soul. Unlike Crowley, Sam may have ‘meant’ to stop Lester before he actually sold his soul, but he didn’t take any steps to guarantee that outcome.
Also – yay for wife and her bowling friend for finding happiness in the wake of her douchebag husband’s ~tragic~ death.
Ah, Crowley still pining after Dean. To the point of immolating anyone trying to replace him.
And, on the other side of our unrequited feels parallel, we have Cas trying to let Hannah down easy. Which he successfully managed to communicate to her that he was doing. A+ communication skills, Cas, bb. He noticed she was feeling feelings and took steps to talk to her early on so that he could try to make her disappointment as little as possible. Very impressed by your human-ing skills, Cas.
Hmm, overall, I feel like they gave away too much about this episode in sneak peeks, tbh. The great cat-and-mouse of Sam and demon!Dean would have been a lot more ~boom~ if we hadn’t seen it a month or so ago. That said, yeah, ended way too easy to be anything but wallpapering over the problem, but the Winchesters have plenty of experience in that (of course, it is BRL, so it might just be them not quite able to give things as much weight as they need to have – like Abaddon’s death).
As far as BRL eps go, this one was better than most, but it still didn’t give enough ~weight~ to a lot of moments, I think. Surprisingly good job with the Cas/Hannah stuff, though. I didn’t feel like they were shaming Hannah for her feelings, but Cas’s lack of reciprocation was pretty clear in the text.
Cas talking about why Dean might want to stay a demon – because being human is honestly just too painful sometimes. Possibly also why he leaves at the end of the episode (since we… didn’t actually get an explanation of why he leaves… which… ????). Or I guess he wants to continue to teach Hannah how to be a good leader and have confidence in herself. IDK.
