Vampire Diaries 4x01 - growing pains
Oct. 11th, 2012 11:25 pmI didn't post about Revenge this week. I really enjoyed the episode, but the show moves so fast that by the time I think about anything, it's different already! Which is fun, but it makes meta hard. But I love the characters and the relationships lots.
Stefan/Elena is seriously one of the unhealthiest relationships I've ever seen portrayed. I can't even with them. I seriously can't. I really hope that the show doesn't want me to believe it's epic and perfect and awesome because it's just this huge pile of DNW for me.
Stefan tried to have it EVERY POSSIBLE WAY in the aftermath of the whole Matt-saving/Elena-not-saving situation. He regrets it! Except he doesn't! And Matt damn well better appreciate Stefan saving him when he didn't want to be saved EVEN THOUGH if Elena is the one that doesn't want to be saved, we all need to respect her choice. Only Elena's choices matter! Not anyone else's!
Argh. I mean, Stefan has acted like only Elena's choices matter for a long while now, but it doesn't make it any less frustrating to watch it in action again.
(note: why does Stefan's bizarre selfish-unselfishness bother me when Damon's doesn't? Because the show acknowledges that Damon is doing things that are violent and off-putting and unhealthy, while I feel like they're praising Stefan for doing things that are frequently just as damaging)
I did like a lot of things:
the Liz-Damon-Matt scenes were all sharp; really, Matt was great in general. Loved seeing Grams again -- it was painful to see her die (again!). Bonnie's stuff was all good. I liked Elena's actual transitioning stuff. Stefan and Rebekah tag-teaming a killing was actually surprisingly effective for being a Stefan-plan.
Jeremy was interesting! His hatred of vampires runs deeper than I'd realized (it makes me go back to Esther whispering in Alaric's ear while he was dead). Wonder where they're planning to go with that in relation to Jeremy-Elena. I mean, Matt and Liz were like that with Caroline at first -- 'Oh, no! My loved one is deader than dead and just a fiend walks in her body!' -- but they got over it when Caroline persisted in being, you know, Caroline.
I'm really glad that the Tyler-Klaus secret was barely a secret for long at all because that make-out squicked me right until T-K was all "love, wrong time, wrong place, wrong equipment" which actually did make me laugh.
But, man, the Stefan/Elena stuff is coming close to making the show unwatchable for me. I might have to start skipping any scenes where they're spending time together. Ugh. Maybe that part will be better on rewatch?

Date: 2012-10-12 06:39 am (UTC)At this point, if Alaric wasn't dead, I'd say he and Damon should head out of town for a few years.
*sigh*
But of course we don't get that.
No, instead Damon gets penalized for being a vampire, while Stefan is heroic. They BOTH do shitty things, but only one of them is forced to own up to it. At this point, I wouldn't be surprised if Damon is a little more vampiric. Him settling into himself may not please Elena, but ultimately he may find a healthier balance of keeping people around (a few) and living among them.
