Teen Wolf 1x01: Wolf Moon
Sep. 24th, 2012 07:51 pmSo, one of the reasons that I'm rewatching is so that I can come to a better understanding of Scott's character. Because, you know, Scott's plan at the end of S2 should not come out of nowhere. I should not be utterly baffled that Scott has a plan. And my reaction really wasn't based on other fannish input, because I barreled through the two seasons quickly. I did read people's reactions to my reactions (obviously), but I was going through the show too fast to integrate anyone else's thoughts into my read of the show.
Let's see how it goes!
Set-up of characters:
I think they did a good job with Allison. One of the main threads of her character throughout both S1 and S2 is disliking being weak and seeing being stoic as the only way for a good, powerful 'non-girly' woman to be. This matches strongly with the way her mother and aunt behave; it's pretty much the way that their family teaches their daughters to behave. Allison feels an instinctive sympathy and panic over hurting an innocent animal but tells herself that this feeling makes her weak and a 'girl' rather than a strong woman.
The musical cues all try to tell me to be scared of Derek but I didn't even fall for it the first time. They're just too over-the-top. Plus, we have Stiles giving us the tragic backstory and then we have Derek actively saving Scott's life at the end of the episode.
Speaking of Stiles, yeah, he's definitely the primary mover on the protagonist's side of the story. There are three people, basically, who are doing things in S1 -- Peter, as the endgame villain, Jackson as the day-to-day antagonist, and Stiles as a plot catalyst. Stiles is constantly active, constantly pushing the narrative. Most of the other characters aren't making choices at this point: Derek is there because of Laura's death, Allison is there because her parents moved there, Scott is a werewolf because Stiles wanted to check out the dead body in the woods. Stiles is also loyal and supportive of his friend while still retaining a sense of perspective.
Scott... sigh. Well. He gets better in S2. I disagree with the show's choice to spend only six and a half minutes with Scott before he gets bitten; I wish it'd been longer. Part of my inevitable problem with the character is his instant adoration of Allison and the way it gets used as justification for him basically not caring about other things that are worth caring about. I dislike instant!love trope anyway (see: Doctor/Reinette; Stefan/Elena, etc), so that doesn't help. Part of how he acts here can probably be attributed to him being a new werewolf -- we see some of that happening with the other new wolves in S2 -- but that goes back to me wishing we'd gotten to know pre-wolf Scott better so that we would know this preoccupation with sports and romance and the selfishness he frequently shows is out-of-character for him.
This sums up a lot of the S1 conflict between Derek and Scott:
Derek: "The bite is a gift."
Scott: "I don't want it."
Though, actually, until the downsides turned up, Scott was all about embracing the boost that the bite gave him. And he never really stops revelling in that (unlike, say, Clark Kent, Scott never quits the team because it's unfair to the other students). Yes, Peter absolutely should not have bitten him without permission, but Scott was actually pretty thrilled about all the same werewolf stuff that Derek is currently extolling the joys of - the new physical gifts, etc. right up until it had a price instead of being a magic switch of awesome.
Also, here Derek 'adopts' Scott as a brother. Which is not something Scott feels in return at any point in the episodes thus far aired. Derek's behaviors and choices throughout both seasons reflects this choice that Derek makes; he acts in a very older brother manner to Scott frequently
This is basically for my own reference. I am probably not going to do this for the other episodes I rewatch. Unless I feel like it.
When I'm directly quoting from the show, it's in quote marks.
What Happens:
The first main series reoccuring character that we meet is Sheriff Stilinski as he gets called out to the woods to look for Laura's body, though we aren't properly introduced to him. We first see Scott at 38 seconds into the episode. Scott lives in what appears to be a two-story house surrounded by trees. He likes lacrosse, he works out, and he brushes his teeth. I'm glad that Scott cares about hygiene.
We meet Stiles at one minute and 18 seconds into the episode. At 1:20, Scott says, "Stiles"; our first formal introduction to a character. Nice to meet you, Stiles! We also learn that Scott('s family) keeps a bat around the house in case of prowlers. We learn that Stiles is the son of the Sheriff and that he enjoys sarcasm. He's also very intrigued by dead bodies, especially if they are in odd circumstances.
"The body" is in Beacon Hills Preserve, to which there is no admission after dark. We learn that Scott has been relegated to the bench for lacrosse in previous years, but that he's determined to make first line this year. Stiles does not have faith in his friend's ability to make first line. We learn that Stiles is somewhat impulsive and prone to acting before thinking (hasn't thought about which half of the body they're looking for; hasn't wondered about what they'll do if the murderer is still around). Scott is very used to Stiles not planning things out. Scott is a "severe asthmatic".
At 3:10, Scott says "Stiles!" again. And again at 3:15. And at 3:25.
At 3:30, Stiles encounters his father. His father calls him "this little delinquent". At 3:39, Stiles calls him 'dad'. We confirm that Stiles listens in to most of the calls his father gets from dispatch. Sheriff Stilinski asks about Stiles's "usual partner in crime". At 3:51, Stiles says, "Who, Scott?" He says Scott's name again a few seconds later.
It's interesting to me that we hear Stiles's name four times before we hear Scott's. Anyway, Stiles lies to his dad and says that Scott's not with him.
We learn that tomorrow is the "first day back at school". At 4:04, Sheriff Stilinski calls out Scott's name, twice. He calls Stiles "young man". The two of them leave, which leaves Scott alone. In the woods. With half of a dead body somewhere around.
Scott gets bitten (by Peter) around six and a half minutes into the show (it takes a little time to happen). Also, deer run away from werewolves (I'm sure we're all shocked).
Next day, we learn that Scott gets to school via bike. Jackson arrives via Porsche and is a jerk to Scott in his first second of screentime. Someone (maybe Danny?) calls out Jackson's name at 7:49. Scott discloses the events of last night to Stiles. Stiles notes that California does not have wolves.
At 8:38, Stiles notes "Lydia Martin" passing him. This is the first last name that we've heard on the show. He attempts to say "Hey, Lydia" to her but she doesn't notice him. Stiles accuses Scott of making him a 'nerd by association' (I can't, off the top of my head, actually think of anything about Scott that makes him fit into the stereotype of being a 'nerd'. Anyone got anything?). At 9:30, we see the first hint of Scott's superpowered senses when he hears Allison's phone ringing when she's outside the room he's in and quite a distance away from him.
Allison's mom is calling her for the third time today. We also learn that she lived in San Francisco for "more than a year", which is out of the norm for her family who tend to move frequently.
We formally meet "Allison Argent" at 10:10 into the episode, since she will be sharing English class with Scott and Stiles. We also learn that Scott is terrible at pretending he doesn't have superpowers, since he offers Allison a pen and she'd only mentioned not having one when she was on the phone, outside, yards away from him. She notes the weirdness. Allison and Scott's lockers are in visual distance of each other.
Lydia introduces herself to Allison at 10:50, by complimenting her on her fashion. Allison's mom was a buyer for a boutique in San Francisco. Lydia declares Allison her new best friend. At eleven minutes into the show, we learn that Jackson and Lydia are in a relationship that involves kissing in public; she says his name.
A girl that I don't think we ever see again comes up to Stiles and Scott to complain about how Allison is already a member of "Lydia's clique". Stiles explains that this is because Allison is hot. Lydia and Jackson invite Allison to a party that Friday and she declines with a lie about it being family night. We get further confirmation from Jackson that the school is all about lacrosse. Beacon Hills has won the state championship for the last three years; Jackson is team captain.
At 11:53, Stiles calls himself Scott's "best friend". Scott talks about how tired he is of being left out of things and sitting on the sidelines. At 12:04, the coach calls Scott "McCall", telling us his last name. We learn at 12:35 that Lydia doesn't know who Scott is.
When the whistle blows, Scott -- who is using his wolf skills to listen in on Lydia and Allison's conversation -- doubles over in pain. Scott catches a ball at 13:14. Allison and Lydia are both impressed by Scott's skill. Jackson is pissed off. Lydia lets off a spontaneous cheer when Scott catches the ball that Jackson hurls at him; I like that she really does seem very into the sport all on its own -- she and Stiles are the two people cheering the loudest for Scott after he makes the catch. After practice, Stiles and Scott are back in the woods. Scott tells Stiles about his enhanced abilities/senses, proving it by smelling something in Stiles's jacket that Stiles did not even know was there.
At 15:07, Stiles says that Scott has lycanthropy. At this time, he's joking, but he is, of course, correct. Stiles also mentions that the upcoming Friday is a full moon.
...the musical cues on this show are really ridiculous.
So, Derek appears at 15:50. At 16:24, Stiles tells us that he is, indeed, "Derek Hale" and fills us in on what Stiles knows about Derek: he's "only a few years older" than Scott and Stiles, his family burned to death in a fire "like ten years ago" (I believe this gets changed later on, which can be excused by Stiles not remembering exactly how long ago it was; I'm impressed that he remembered Derek and could place his face so well, frankly).
Scott works at the Beacon Hills' Animal Clinic, which closes at 5:30 pm. It's already dark when Scott flips the sign from 'open' to 'closed', which argues for the series having started as winter break is ending. When Scott investigates his bite, it's healed. Also, cats don't like him anymore. Allison shows up the clinic, having hit a dog on the road. Scott has power over dogs now and his eyes glow yellow (for the first time). Allison isn't wearing a bra.
Allison feels that freaking out over hitting the dog with her car means that she's acting "like a total girl". She clarifies to say she's not a "girly-girl". She wants to be "tougher than that". Scott says that he'd have reacted just as emotionally, if not more so. Uses the same language as Allison, but I suspect he's mirroring her choice of word rather than using the word that he would have chosen independently. She doubts that he would be that emotional.
Scott did not know the word 'lycanthropy' but does know litigious. Could be that he's just disinterested in horror/fantasy; this tracks with Stiles's greater interest in all Scott's werewolf affairs than Scott ever shows.
Scott pulls the old "you have an eyelash on your cheek" maneuver on Allison. After the dog is taken care of, Scott asks Allison if she'd like to go to the party with him, and she confirms that she was lying before and that she would like to go with him.
After he goes to bed that night, he appears to sleepwalk into the woods. He sees the Alpha there in the woods that morning. When he's at school, Jackson confronts him and accuses him of using steroids. Scott doesn't understand. Perhaps he's just extremely bad at interpreting subtext? Anyway, Scott straight-up tells Jackson all the stuff that's been happening to him recently. Jackson doesn't take him seriously and tells him that he'll figure out what's going on. Is physically aggressive. Calls Scott "McCall" (3x).
Stiles tries to tell Scott about what he's learned about the body in the woods (wolf hair found). Scott doesn't pay attention; lacrosse is more important. Scott makes a near-impossible shot, makes the team to play starter (first line). Stiles is a bit concerned. When he gets home, he investigates werewolves and does research.
We learn that Derek is being questioned about the body in the woods (among others) and that Stiles takes Adderall. Stiles is now certain that Scott is a werewolf (first instance shown of Stiles having good instincts?). Scott doesn't want to deal with it; he has a date with Allison.
Quote from Stiles's book on werewolves: "The change can be triggered by anger or by anything that raises your pulse."
At 29 minutes, Scott slams Stiles up against the wall. Stiles's first wall-slam! He raises his fist to punch Stiles but ultimately just claws Stiles's chair instead. Before he leaves, he apologizes to Stiles.
At 29:52, we meet Scott's mom. Scott does not have a car of his own, but his mom lets him borrow hers for the night. When Scott and Allison get to the party, Derek is there. Lurking. Lydia and Jackson are making out against a pillar, Lydia sees Scott and Allison dancing together. Yep, she lied to you, Lydia. It will not be the last time.
Scott feels sick/pained and leaves the party; Allison watches him drive off. Derek introduces himself to Allison as a "friend of Scott's". Hey, since he knows she's Allison, I assume he knows she's Allison Argent.
I think we've had five separate shirtless scenes for Scott at this point.
At 35 minutes into the episode, we meet Mrs. Argent.
36 minutes, Derek tells Scott to run (from the hunters) and tells him that Allison is safe. The hunters show up, shoot Scott in the arm to pin him to a tree. We see Chris Argent (though we don't know it's him yet). Derek saves Scott's life and they escape together.
And, at 38 minutes, Scott is more concerned about Allison's opinion of him as a potential dating partner than, for example, the people who were shooting at him last night. When they're at school the next... Monday, I guess it must be... Scott asks Allison to trust that he left for an important reason and she gives him a second chance.
At the very end of the episode, Scott sees that Allison's dad is one of the hunters from the previous night.
Some stats:
Death count:
At the start of the episode, Peter has recently killed Laura.
Peter: 1
Direct lies:
Stiles says that Scott's not with him in the woods. Allison tell Lydia and Jackson that she can't come to the party because she has 'family night'. Scott does not lie to Allison, just tells her that there's something he can't tell her, so none for him. Derek also doesn't lie, though he fails to tell Scott that he's not the werewolf that bit Scott.
Stiles to his father: 1
Allison to Jackson/Lydia: 1
Let's see how it goes!
