Movie: Iron Man
Nov. 10th, 2011 08:22 amFinally watched this.
That had a really good story, acting, and effects. Basically, all ducks in a row. I actually had to pause the movie at various points in the latter part of the movie to yell at Obiediah for being an asshole traitor. Jerk. Ugh. What a horrible man.
RDJ did a great job. He was mostly feckless and kinda sleazy in the beginning (well, the '36 hours earlier'; oh, and the cold open with the kidnapping was a great way to start) and the character evolution was well-done. I like that he did have a sort of naivety/innocence - he really didn't understand the way the weapons that he was creating weren't just going to go to 'his side' but that there was a chance that underhanded dealings could get them to the people they were fighting. At the start of his character arc, Tony seemed to see the conflict as very clear-cut - 'American=good' 'not-American=bad' - and he learned that it wasn't like that at all. That things were actually complicated and messy.
I found it interesting that he's this rich industrialist who is constantly given the chance to be surrounded by other rich wealthy (white, male) people - but the people he trusts the most are Pepper and Rhodey, both of whom are inside that power structure but not at the top. And his relationships with his various robots and his AI (which... the AI that he created and spends the majority of his time communicating with, he made a sarcastic male voice that flirts back with him when he flirts with it and doesn't take him too seriously. Says a lot about him as a person, even before he became Iron Man). He likes to be in charge of his stuff and he's fairly bossy, but he's not a tyrant or even particularly authoritarian.
(I think I like him more than I like Batman)
So, yeah, good movie. Going to try to watch the second one this weekend.
