American Idol: Top 13
Mar. 9th, 2011 09:59 pm1. Lauren Alaina - Any Man of Mine
Overplayed the quirky a little. Good voice but not really the best performance. Some of her breathing/phrasing sounded off. Not as good as the original version. But I think Lauren has better in her to give us and I'm sure she'll be around next week for another chance.
2. Casey - With A Little Help From My Friends
That guy definitely has charisma. Really liked this performance. He's got that growl and swagger. He's so much more intense when he's singing than when he's just being Casey. Loved the falsetto bit in the middle.
3. Ashthon Jones – When You Tell Me That You Love Me
Nice glory note but the rest was kinda just... there. Randy is giving such helpful and coherent feedback this season. Weird.
4. Paul McDonald – Come Pick Me Up
His outfit is adorable. Paul has such a distinctive tone in his voice and way of moving. Stands out a lot. Not as good a performance as last week, but I do still like him. Like Lauren, he needs to pick it up for next week, but I think he'll be around to do that.
5. Pia Toscano – All By Myself
She's got a great voice. Hope she doesn't overdo the emotional ballads in the future, but I'm good with two weeks in a row. She sounded wonderful and she sold it well. Good job from Pia.
6. James Durbin – Maybe I’m Amazed
Fabulous job from James. He showed real versatility in this performance. Lovely job. Sounded beautiful this week.
7. Haley Reinhart – Blue
So, I loved Haley last week (unlike the majority of the internet). Love her voice, love the warbly way she's pulling out her notes for this song. Great job. Love this girl (even if the rest of the internet hates her).
8. Jacob Lusk – I Believe I Can Fly
Little overdone for me, but I still really like Jacob. I'd love to hear him pull back and treat a song gently, but I appreciate him and I think he's got time to show that. Liked him but not as much as not much as last week. Randy, again, had some good criticism (there was a bit of sharpness in there). He's being such a good judge this season. Weird.
9. Thia Megia – Smile
I winced when she said, "Charlie Chapman" and was corrected by someone off-camera. Girl is young, yeah. But that's unrelated to her singing. Her voice is good but the emotion is all surface gloss. I'm not hearing the depth. Thia needs to grow up a bit before she sings songs like this, I think. I don't think she understands what the song is about.
I feel the need to put this in here:
10. Stefano Langone – Lately
Great job from Stefano! Makes me glad he got in on wildcard. Very nice. Good progression; good emotion. Wasn't as thrilled with the fast bits, but when he was standing and singing, it was excellent.
11. Karen Rodriguez – I Could Fall In Love
Feel like I'm getting a lot more of her personality this week. Liked it better than last week.
12. Scott McCreery – The River
Scotty does what he does and he's good at it. Boy has a real future in country music. He's the genuine article.
13. Naima Adedapo – Umbrella
This is something different for Idol. She did it up and went for it. She really stood out tonight. Like the attitude. Really loved the vibe. Definitely some breathing and pitch issues, but I think she can work on that because I think a lot of that came from her not having learned how to balance dancing and singing together, because her pitch was fine last week (from what I recall).
Also, Ryan, we all remember that IDOL-13 is a porn line. You aren't fooling anyone.
Favorites: Casey, Pia, James, Haley, Scotty, Naima (Naima not quite as high as the others)
Who I think should go home: Thia. Maybe Ashthon.
ETA: Apparently, Naima wrote the reggae breakdown in her version of 'Umbrella' herself, which bumps her up a notch for me.
