Vampire Diaries: 2x12 - Descent

butterflyJules wakes up naked in the woods. It's the day after the full moon. She also appears to have ripped several campers to shreds. She piles the body parts together and prepares to burn them. I'm reminded of Damon in "You're Undead to Me".
A cop pulls up and she playacts the grieving victim in order to throw him off her trail. And while his back is turned, she bashes his head in. Okay, don't need to wonder about how this girl got her trigger flipped.
Elena and Stefan make out. Elena wants to be surgically bonded to Stefan so that they can be truly co-dependent.
"When have I ever wanted somebody to get hurt?" Stefan asks. Dude, we all remember Amber. She asked you if you wanted to hurt her and you told her, in detail, exactly how you wanted to kill her and drain the blood from her body. Don't front like you've never wanted people to ever get hurt. And that's not even counting the bad guys that you help kill and/or torture.
Anyway, Stefan isn't thrilled with Elena's deal with Elijah.
Stefan is also now trying Katherine's trick with building up a vervain tolerance. Oh, so that he can't be compelled by Elijah. That's actually rather clever, Stefan. He's off to hunt down Isobel and try to ask her some in-depth research questions. He has this tricky essay for history class, you see.
Damon tries to jolly and/or mock Rose out of her fatalism re: her werewolf bite. Elena is walking by while Damon is checking out Rose's bite (looks nasty) and stops when Damon calls out to her. He tries to non-verbally indicate that she should lie right now.
Elena does her best to lie for Damon - "It's not bad." Damon wants to know where Stefan is, Elena shrugs. Damon 'volunteers' Elena for the job of looking after Rose (and he also reminds Elena that he is actually just as firmly on Team No Dead Elena as Stefan is) and off he goes. Elena stops him to ask if Rose will die. Probably, Damon says.
Caroline and Tyler. ♥ &hearts &hearts &hearts &hearts
It's sweet and then it gets deep and Caroline tells Tyler about the danger of a werewolf bite to vampires and then she has to lie to him (sadness!) and then Matt interrupts. When Caroline starts to reassure Matt that nothing is going on between her and Tyler, Matt is all, 'dude, of course not. You aren't a liar'. Oh, poor Caroline. Poor Matt.
Someone please tell that poor boy the truth.
Matt kisses her and she's into it, but all the (secret) reasons that she broke up with him still apply, so she tells him that they can't be together still.
Alaric spots Jules at the Grill talking to Liz and immediately calls Damon to let him know. Awesome. Stefan comes up and asks Alaric - "Is that the... rowr?" Hee. You can imitate Damon's habits any time, Stefan. It's kinda adorable.
Alaric assumes that Stefan is there to help them all find a cure for Rose. However, he's forgotten that every thing that Stefan does in recent days is all about Elena. Stefan reminds him, though. So, Alaric will look for an old number of Isobel's that might work - if he finds it, he will send it Stefan's way.
Is this Damon's room? Look at bed, wow. I think I remember reading that Damon's bed was ginormous. Anything, Elena is putting Rose to bed in Damon's room. There are piles of books by the bed. He has a nice set-up and Elena is not shy about glancing around.
"You've never been in Damon's room before, have you?"
Elena looks around and picks up the first book on the pile by Damon's bed - Gone with the Wind. Elena teases Rose about having expecting silk sheets in Damon's room.
"You're lucky, you know," Rose tells Elena. "No one's ever loved me the way that you're loved."
"I doubt that."
"Trevor was my best friend. Nothing more." And she never set up roots because she was always on the run. No love for Rose.
Elena hands Rose a glass of blood and Rose wants to know why Elena is giving up or, if she isn't, what her deal with Elijah means anyway. Rose doesn't get Elena's willingness to die. Not her thing. She spent five hundred years running from death. Rose is starting to have delusional dreams, remembering the past. When Rose tries to have another drink of blood, she starts throwing up. And then she's behind Elena, grabs her and slams her against a dresser. And when she's looking at Elena, she's seeing Katherine. She pulls out of the delusion and calms back down. Elena is freaked.
Oh, Rose. "So much time wasted. I only wish that I hadn't been so afraid."
Damon gets in the Grill and heads toward Jules - Stefan grabs him.
"There's a lot of people here."
"Damn, there goes my plan to rip her spleen through her back."
Ha.
Anyway, Damon goes over to talk to Jules while Stefan gets the chance to talk to Isobel on the phone.
Damon and Jules - two slightly unhinged predators attempting to have a civil conversation.
"I'll tell you the only cure that exists. Take a stake and drive it through her heart."
Rose is missing again. Elena gets her phone - "It's Elena, I'm worried about Rose. I think you should come home."
She's gone off again, attacks Elena - they're close to a window, so Elena rips down the curtain and gets Rose off her with some sunlight. Ah, I love that girl. Good for you, Elena. And when Rose tries to get her again, she digs her fingers right into Rose's bite wound. Such a fighter when she's under direct threat. So much love.
She runs into Stefan's room, blocks the door, and opens the door that's attached to the sun-drenched balcony. So smart and resourceful and. Ah. Love. Then she makes herself a stake.
Later, she's searching for Rose in the house and turns around to find Damon, who is concerned. It's night now, which means that Rose can roam freely.
And, indeed, she is, including feeding on someone who asked her if she was okay.
Damon gets a call from Liz and ends up at the site of Rose's (dead) victim. Elena can't reach Stefan. Damon is more concerned about other things and hands Elena a stake.
Rose gets another two victims before Damon finds her. She attacks him, too, while Elena watches. She's able to bring her back to sanity, where she's horrified at what she's done. Damon picks up the sobbing Rose and carries her back to the Salvatore place, Elena following.
Rose apologizes again to Elena, while Damon really wants Elena to get away from the dangerous place. Rose continues: "That's the worst part about it-" being a vampire, I assume "-the need to kill. The thirst... the pleasure if brings you afterwards. Wasn't meant to be evil."
"Damon's a lot like me," Rose tells Elena. "He wants to care... and the minute he does, he runs away from it. I'm sorry for what I've done today."
"I know."
"And you need to fight. I know that you're scared but you have to do it anyway. Why are you so nice to me?"
"Us humans."
"I can never forget it. What it's like to be human. It haunts me. It's the only thing that's kept me going."
It's getting worse for Rose. Damon goes over to take care of Rose and tells Elena to leave.
Tyler hasn't been able to stop thinking about Caroline telling him that one bite could be fatal to her, and her risking that in order to be there to comfort him. She tells him that she cares about him, and he kisses her. She kisses back. Until she doesn't and she pulls away. She goes in and slams her door shut - "everyone just needs to stop kissing me!"
Damon is holding Rose in his bed.
"Who would have thought that you'd be a nice guy?"
"I'm not nice. I'm mean. I like it."
"You lie."
Rose remembers fields and trees and horses and sunlight. Wearing a long blue dress and reveling in the sun. Damon is helping her dream of her human life and sharing the dream with her. Rose misses being human.
"I had friends and a family. I mattered."
"You still matter."
"No. But you do. You've built a life, whether you want to admit it or not. I spent five hundred years just existing."
"You didn't have a choice. You were running from Klaus."
"There's always a choice."
Damon complains about her bringing philosophy into things and they cuddle on the grass. Rose is trying to figure out if there's an afterlife waiting for her after she dies as a vampire. She's not afraid any more and she's not in pain. While she's in the dream, still, he stakes her. And he cries.
That was perhaps the kindest possible way that Rose could have been killed. Yes, Damon, Rose was right. You can be very nice, when you let yourself care.
Damon shows Rose's body to Liz, evidence that he took care of the vampire problem.
Jules has met up with Tyler and wants to make friends. She reveals that she knows that Tyler is a wolf, that Caroline is a vampire, and that Mason was killed by vampires. And that Caroline is lying to him about there being no other vampires around. She reveals that a whole bunch of wolves are on their way. Eeep.
Damon gets back to the house and Elena is there.
"I just came back to see if you were okay."
"I appreciate the gesture, but I'm just glad that it's over."
"You know that I don't believe that."
He tells her to go home.
"Damon, I'm your friend."
"I'm well-aware of that."
"And a friend usually knows if their friend is hurting."
"What do you want to hear? That I cared about Rose? That I'm upset? Well, I didn't and I'm not."
"There you go - pretending to turn it off. Pretending not to feel. Damon, you're so close. Don't give up."
"I feel, Elena. Okay? And it sucks. What sucks even more is that it was supposed to be me. Jules was coming after me."
"You feel guilty."
"That would be human of me, wouldn't it, Elena - and I'm not human. You're one to talk about giving up. All you've done is give up. Go home. We've had enough doom, gloom, and personal growth for one night."
She starts to leave, but then she turns and hugs Damon for a long moment, before wishing him goodnight. Oh, and we're full-on back into friendship mode.
Back at Elena's place, there's Stefan. Oh, and there's Uncle-Daddy John! Hi, Uncle-Daddy John!
Damon is reverting back to very old patterns - he's playing dead in the road. Oh, Damon. I wish you wouldn't. The girl driving stops the car and gets out to check on him.
"I'm lost," he says.
"And you're laying in the middle of the road?"
"Not that kind of lost. Metaphorically. Existentially."
"You need help?"
"Well, yes, I do. Can you help me?"
When she sees him drinking and concludes he's drunk, she starts to leave. He grabs her and compels her not to.
"I have a secret and I've never said it out loud. What's the point? It's not going to change anything. It's not going to make me good. Make me adopt a puppy. I can't be what other people want me to be. What she wants me to be. This is who I am, Jessica."
"Are you going to hurt me?"
"I'm not sure."
"Do I kill you or don't I?"
"Please don't."
"But I have to. I'm not human. I miss it. I miss it more than anything in the world. That is my secret. But there's only so much hurt a man can take."
"Please don't."
He frees her from the compulsion and she runs to her car. He watched her run and zips over and feeds. Oh, Damon. I wish that you didn't choose to go back there in order to realize that you want to leave it again.
Jessica dies and Damon's mouth is bloody. He's been bloody for a hundred and forty-plus years.
Poor Jessica. Damon, I hope you swiftly move on to the 'no longer killing people' part of your existential crisis, while realizing that that's a hell of a lot of momentum to shift.

Rose - *sadface*
Jules is taunting a predator, in his home range, and assuming that she will have the advantages. That's gutsy, and well, I have to say that even if I didn't like Damon a whole lot more, he has over a century of experience of living on his side and he is a lot more crazy than she thinks she can pull off.

Although, if she is somehow aligned with the Klaus faction, then it's going to get even worse - and how would that be a good thing for her? I get the impression that she doesn't MIND being a werewolf.

Yeah, Jules seems to have no investment in not randomly killing people every full moon. I think she'll definitely regret crossing Damon, one way or another.

Date: 2011-01-28 05:30 am (UTC)Tyler has made a lot of growth, and he does not WANT to hurt people. Having been lied to by one person does not mean you should run around and kill campers. The basement is STILL a good plan.
Jules just seems apt to run around and cause mayhem - which is great short term, but in the long run - the sheriff didn't do too badly handling vampires (with Damon's help at times) I bet he could get Liz in on the 'hey we have a dangerous new enemy in town' bandwagon.
