Stefan is circling Damon like any good brother/beta making sure his alpha can lick his wounds and HEAL. And he is blatantly showing his teeth from now on, threatening people that come at Damon because that's Stefan's JOB, and now, he feels that he has the RIGHT, and indeed, to him, the HONOR of doing that. And he takes it VERY seriously.
Yes, once Stefan realized that there was actually a place for him to sneak in there - that Katherine's loss left this space - he snuggles right in.
