Movie: Superman Returns

I was hoping for quite a bit with this movie -- I wanted that sense of wonder and hope, I wanted the sense of caring, I wanted a bit of Superman's alien nature, I wanted Lois to be sparky and lovable, I wanted James Marden's character not to die, I wanted the kid to not be annoying, and, most of all, I wanted Superman.
I got pretty much everything that I wanted and then some. There were a couple of things that I possibly could have liked more, but I was so pleased with the movie that I can't really remember the nitpicks.
I think that Routh did a stand-up job as Superman. He was kind, strong, and good while still containing an aspect of alien reserve. Lovely. Lois was a little soft at times, but, again, overall, I liked her and felt she did justice to the role. Lex was great, funny and dangerous and full of hatred.
We got both adoptive and biological families in this, which I found lovely -- I loved that little Jason calls Richard 'Daddy'. In some ways, the movie reminded me a little of the set-up that we get in the series of The Dead Zone. Mother, child, and then two fathers -- one biological, but not there for several years, one not-biological, but present and caring and considered father. And in both cases, the biological father didn't know that he had a child, but he is special in some way that would have made it hard for him to be the present father-figure. In both cases, the biological father and the adoptive father ended up liking each other and needing to trust each other. And, in both cases, I found myself seriously pondering the possibilities of an OT3. Especially since the biological daddy is still needed to try to save the world, in both cases, so he still isn't in a good position to be the day-to-day father. And heroes need a place where they can rest and just exist, and the family can provide a place for that without providing him with the pressure of needing to be an active father.
I loved Richard in general. I can accept the horrible way Cyclops was treated if that was the price to get Richard (though I shouldn't have to, and he did still deserve better). Richard was smart, caring, protective but trusting. A stand-up guy, the kind of guy that Superman would be if he were human and didn't need a disguise. Plus, really nice forearms. That moment, when he was holding onto Superman while clutching Lois and Jason? Guh. I nearly died from the hot.
So, yes, overall, it more than lived up to my expectations and I'm very pleased.
And a very happy Canada Day to all the Canadians on my flist!
