Got my S1 dvds!
I'm going to go through the episodes more slowly and thoughtfully now. There might be spoilers for any of the reveals/info shared so far (up through 2x11).
1x01 - The Pilot
So, Stefan. For over a century, you've lived in secret. In the shadows... of Bon Jovi concerts. Just saying. Love you. You're a wee bit melodramatic, is all.
Anyway, the cheesy opening monologue is just as cheesy as I remembered.
It ends with "I am a vampire and this is my story." This is what I meant in one of my 2xWhatever posts about feeling like Stefan had been clearly set up as The Romantic Hero (now available in leather), which was reinforced by the previouslys. Except then the previouslys changed, so I'm trying to figure out if that means that the show no longer is considering Stefan as The Romantic Hero (maybe he's just A Romantic Hero now). Anyway, it's set up, here, as Stefan's story.
So, probably Damon kills the couple that went to see the guy with a guitar. Probably Damon because of the fog. I have to say, getting hit by a car seems like a lot of work for a meal. There have to be easier ways.
Right, yes, it's Damon. We know for sure because he's wearing one of the blue Salvatore rings (that lets him daywalk).
Okay, so it looks like Damon swoops down from above to nab the girl. Except I don't think we ever see vampires fly. It is supposed to be a horizontal leap? Is he jumping from a tree branch? #questionsthatwillneverbeanswered
Anyway, this means that we actually see Damon on the show before we see Stefan. Not clearly, but it's him (and his Salvatore ring).
Now we see Stefan. He's watching the sun rise and angsting about how he shouldn't have come back (doesn't he come back every few years, though, to check on things?). He has no choice, he has to know her, this teenage girl that looks like Katherine (who he keeps a picture of) but doesn't seem to act like her at all (which he knows from his four months or so of stalking).
Finally, we meet Elena. She's talking about she's going to pretend to be fine and while I am glad that they moved away from the diary conceit (kinda cheesy), it's nice to have it here to set up her not being okay and being still depressed from the death of her parents.
Aunt Jenna is very overwhelmed and unprepared to be their guardian. It's even clearer the second time around (did we ever hear more about her thesis?). We get a reminder of the deaths (caused by Damon) in the television set behind Elena.
Elena's friend Bonnie drives her to school. Elena gets a car at some point, I think?
I wonder if the witchy powers activate at a certain age and that's why Bonnie's Grams has started trying to prepare her for them by telling her she's psychic. So, Bonnie looks over at Elena, about to make a prediction for her - and Damon's crow hits the windshield.
(we never find out exactly what's up with the crow, but it's definitely Damon's)
Stefan is striding into the school, all dark clothes and sunglasses, while Bonnie complains about the lack of cute boys (maybe this is the issue - it's not that boys aren't interested in Bonnie; it's that Bonnie has already shot down all the boys and they're afraid of making a move again).
Bonnie says something that makes me wince; Elena waves to Matt, who is still broken-up over their break up. Elena is wearing a red shirt, Bonnie is wearing purple and blue. I remind myself that this isn't Smallville and that probably everyone is not color-coded for convenience.
Aw... Caroline. She's adorable in blue and she's tactless but, knowing her better now, I can see her genuine affection for Elena and her heart. ♥ Caroline.
lol, Stefan in his jeans and hoodie and sunglasses. I don't know; it just seems funny. Anyway, Bonnie is interested in Stefan's back/ass, Elena is not getting worked up over it just yet.
Stefan compels the secretary/register/whoever and I gotta ask... does she not have a boss? Who would require the appropriate paperwork? But apparently not. I think that this town spends all its money on its events and not much on the actual running of the town.
So, while Bonnie is distracted by Stefan's ass, Elena goes off to school her little brother on not doing stupid drug-related shit in school. This is the scene that made me fall in love with Elena. She's so fierce and that is my very favorite type of Elena (I wonder if part of the reason that I like Damon/Elena more than Stefan/Elena now is because she is fierce with him much more often. Things to ponder).
I love that Jeremy is taller than Elena but she can push him around out of her Big Sister authority (Elena is actually very physical, I notice - she pushes, slaps, hugs, etc. quite a bit).
"I know who you are and it's not this person. So don't be this person." Elena is also awesome in that she sees the best of someone and expects them to act that way.
Bonnie and Caroline both think Stefan is quite the hottie (there's this girl next to Caroline that is all 'whatever' and that makes me giggle).
Anyway, Stefan totally planned that 'meet cute', didn't he? He's got super-hearing and super-reflexes and just happens to be walking by the men's room door when Elena comes out? Don't buy it. He set up his own 'meet cute' with his (literal) dream girl.
Elena is flustered, Stefan is cute; however, it kinda gets less cute whenever I think about the stalking Stefan put into creating this relationship. I'll avoid thinking about that for right now. They do flirty!eyes in the classroom; Matt mopes and Bonnie rejoices in sisterhood solidarity.
Elena goes to the graveyard to write in her diary more. It's Damon's crow that joins her there first, then Damon's fog, and then Damon (though she doesn't see him). Damon has definitely noticed that there is a girl who looks just like Katherine and that his brother appears to be stalking her. And they make a point of having her turn back so that he (lurking in the fog) can see her face. He's got to be going, 'huh, wtf?' Just a little bit.
She runs away, falls, and there's Stefan. He freaks out over her blood a little and they bond over having relatives in the cemetery. Stefan keeps staring and staring. 'She looks like Katherine,' I imagine him thinking, 'but Katherine never babbled like this.'
The show points out that Elena is observant by having her notice Stefan's ring. This is helpful, later, when she's putting together the clues that add up to 'vampire!'. Ah, 'did you hurt yourself?' - Stefan can smell her blood, can't he? Anyway, the smell of blood overwhelms him and he must leave.
Stefan in black during this episode.
"I lost control today. Everything I've kept buried inside came rushing to the surface. I'm simply not able to resist her."
"How did you know where I lived?" Elena asked. I've been stalking you for months, Stefan doesn't answer. Stefan and Elena bond over both writing journals. Talks about the importance of memories to the girl he knows had her parents die just months earlier.
I noticed the first time that I watched the episode how Stefan's eyes kept constantly returning to Elena during the dinner conversation with Stefan-Elena-Bonnie-Caroline. I thought it was sweet that he was so focused on her. It... become less sweet thinking about it in context of the Katherine-look-alikeness and the stalking.
"Any siblings?"
"None that I talk to."
Zach confronts Stefan about the bodies.
"You said you had it under control." The accusation in Zach's voice really makes me think that he, personally, was witness to one of Stefan's 'falling off the wagon' moments where he killed someone. But that would make it somewhat recent so... hmm.
Stefan goes to his room to angst over Katherine's picture. Again, in retrospect, this really clouds the start of the Stefan/Elena relationship for me. There's an element, I think, of him wanting the girl that he thought Katherine could be, and trying to find that in Elena.
Tanner mentions that he was willing to be lenient when Elena's parents had just died but, obviously, four months is way past time that she should be over it. What a jerk.
"It was a night of great loss." re: the 'civilian' deaths in the church. Thinking of Katherine?
Bonnie reads Elena and she sees - "a crow... there was fog... and a man". Damon. Might just be reading the memory of it (but what she sees is generally meaningful).
Elena and Stefan bond over how mysterious they both are, and she tells him about how her parents died. Stefan and Elena agree that Bonnie is awesome; she tells him about how Matt was totally her Dawson (friends since childhood, needed to at least try it to see if it would work - totally her Dawson) but after her parents died, the lack of (passion, Stefan supplies) in the relationship led her to break up with him.
Apparently, talking about 'passion' with Elena brings up Stefan's bloodlust. Good thing he got a little more control of that. It's interesting, though, because that's how they later talk about how baby vamps are, before they learn to control themselves.
The fog rolls in and Damon attacks Vicky. She lives, though, just like the next time he attacks her. Vicky really was a tragic story.
Elena goes after her (very drunk) brother to administer serious big sister-ing, but they stumble across Vicky first. I think Stefan is totally having an 'oh, fuck, Damon' reaction there.
I wonder if Damon only just got to town - does he ever say later, when he got there? Because, if he didn't just get there, why only start being messy now? We know that he came to town to get the crystal (after the comet had given it juice) and then rescue Katherine, but Stefan must just think that Damon wants to fuck up his life.
Stefan and Damon have it out. Love this set-up. The Stefan-Damon scenes always have plenty of sparks to them; great chemistry.
"When'd you get here?"
"Well, I couldn't miss your first day at school." Hee. And, yeah, sounds like he just got there.
It's been fifteen years since Damon and Stefan last spoke. Damon is constantly on the move in this scene, poking at things, circling his brother.
"Why are you here now?"
"I could ask you the same question. However, I'm fairly certain your answer can be summed up into one little word: Elena."
Bonnie tells Elena that she got the feeling (from her vision of the Damon-stuff) "that it's just beginning".
"She took my breath away. Elena. She's a dead ringer for Katherine. Is it working, Stefan? Being around her, being in her world... does it make you feel alive?"
"She's not... Katherine."
"Well, let's hope not. We both know how that ended."
Playing on Stefan's guilt (since, of course, Damon knows very well that Katherine is alive - though his information is also inaccurate in many ways).
"Tell me - when's the last time you had something stronger than a squirrel?"
The first time I saw this, I didn't see how those two things connected - I thought Damon was changing the subject. But he isn't. Because 'how that ended' was in Stefan drinking human blood and convincing Damon to do the same. Damon starts smacking Stefan, trying to get a reaction, trying to tempt him with blood. Finally gets a reaction when he mentions them drinking Elena, and Stefan pushes back. Exactly what Damon wanted, of course, so he goes after the Elena-thought until Stefan straight up attacks him and they go through the window together. They fight and we learn that drinking human blood makes Damon much stronger as a vampire than Stefan is.
Damon taunts Stefan some more, but gives him back his daywalking ring (he may want to make his brother miserable, but he damn well wants Stefan around to be made miserable). Then Damon casually bests Stefan again, to make very clear the point that he's stronger, and he strolls back to the house that Zach has no right to keep him out of.
Aw, poor Caroline. "How come the guys I want never want me?" "I try, so hard, and I'm never the one."
It's actually really interesting to have this conversation while I'm still thinking about Damon, considering this is basically the sort of feeling that Damon is probably having by the end of the S1. He would use different words, naturally, but there's a similarity there, in the trying so hard and still not being the one wanted.
"It's not a competition, Caroline."
"Yeah, it is."
I love you, the best way I know how - the lyrics over Matt watching over Vicky in the hospital. He loves his sister and he doesn't know how to help her. Not just this time, but ever.
Elena and Stefan emo in the journals.
Stefan: "I wanted to change who I was; create a life with someone new" (who looks exactly like your old girlfriend, just saying) "Someone without the past."
And Damon over at the other table, smiling Caroline's way. She's so hopeful and sweet. Man, poor Caroline.
Elena needs to 'invite the good in'. Honey, at your house? Everyone gets invited in (except, thankfully, Logan 'Scum' Fell).
So, at this point, we learn later that Elena and Stefan had an 'epic' conversation. We never get the details of that conversation. Which kinda bothers me, because it seems like it was the basis of part of the strength of the early Elena/Stefan relationship.
Deaths:
1. Darren; killed by Damon.
2. Brooke; killed by Damon.
Damon's current kill count: 2
Vamp Bites:
1. Darren; bitten by Damon.
2. Brooke; bitten by Damon.
3. Vicky; bitten by Damon.
Damon's current bite count: 3
Compelled:
1. School secretary; compelled by Stefan to let him start school there despite not having the appropriate papers. And I think this is the most effective we've ever seen Stefan's compelling to be (off the human blood). Did he just have a deer or something right before?
Stefan's current compelling count: 1
Bechdel:
1. Elena and Jenna talk about coffee and her thesis; Jeremy is there to say a couple of words, but the primary conversation is Elena and Jenna.
2. Elena and Bonnie talk about Bonnie's potential predictive powers and Bonnie predicts/wishes her friend a happy year.
3. Caroline offers sympathies to Elena; asks Bonnie if Elena is doing okay.
Bechdel moments: I'll go with 2.5, since Jeremy is marginally involved in the Elena/Jenna convo.
Timeline:
Four months before the Pilot: Elena's parents die in a watery car accident.
Night that Darren and Brooke are killed.
Next day, Elena meets Stefan, they hang out in various places that day and night.
Next day, Stefan wows the history class; everyone goes to the 'Back to School' party where Vicky is attacked (by Damon).
Time covered: 3 nights and 2 days.
Shirtless shots:
1. Stefan, pulling another black shirt on instead of the black shirt that he was wearing in the last scene.
Bonnie's Visions:
1. For Elena: a crow, fog, and a man. (adds up to Damon, seems to me). It's just beginning.

Date: 2011-01-06 01:43 pm (UTC)One of these days I'm really going to make that post about things that are different in the books.
Also FYI, I have a fake crow in my house with a sign around his neck that says "I AM DAMON." It was a present from my oldest friend when I was like 14.

Date: 2011-01-06 07:22 pm (UTC)That sounds kinda hilarious. Is it?
