The Vampire Diaries: 1x01 - the pilot

butterflyRemember how I said I was going to watch things during the break? Here goes.
All I've seen of this show is five minutes of the ending of an episode where Kris Allen's "I Need To Know" was playing, which was awesome. All I really know are the basics - teen girl; vampire brothers. There might be a love triangle going on there.
So, the opening monologue was a little bit cheesy. Might be the actor's voice. We'll see if I get used to it (his voice).
Teen couple, went to a concert that the girl really liked but the guy only went for her sake. They drive into a fogbank. This isn't going to end well.
That girl's seatbelt seems really loose, gotta say. Also, they hit someone in the middle of the road. Appropriately freaking out. It's probably a vampire that will kill them (because you want to set up the vampire menace right away in vampire media).
A cell phone being used! That's good. Yay for not forgetting about or ignoring modern technology. No signal, but that does happen, especially on winding forested roads (speaking from experience).
The first close-up we get of the 'body' is of a ring. Could have a heart-shaped emblem? Looks fancy.
And, yes! Vampire goes for the guy. We've got super-speed and teeth accounted for. Will he get the girl, too?
Hmm, looks like these vampires might be able to fly, too (the girl was swooped down on and snagged while she was running).
Looks like sunlight might not be a problem, since the narrator (who I think is a vampire) watches the sun rise (or possibly set?). Or it might just make them weaker. Talks about a 'her' and needing to know 'her'. Probably the dark-haired girl we cut to who is writing in a diary (a ~vampire diary?).
Oh, hey, I do seem to recall something about the lead actress playing double roles? Elena and Katherine. And one of them is a vampire? So, maybe the vampire is curious about the girl because she looks like a vampire that he used to know? Perhaps the one that made him, even (/wild speculation).
Aw, I kinda want to pet the girl (Elena or Katherine? I think that Elena is the one who is the human main character and Katherine is the vampire, from what I've gathered from fandom osmosis) and give her a hug. I think I like her narration better than probable vampire dude's (Damon? Stephan? I think one of them is a 'good' vampire and the other one is a 'bad' one?).
So, Elena's parents are dead and she's living with her aunt. Check. Have never heard of the aunt in my fandom wanderings. Either because she's not considered as interesting a character or possibly because she dies in the pilot. I guess I'll find out! Also, the random boy could be her cousin or a surviving sibling. Again, I'm sure I'll find out.
The aunt seems fairly young, so I'm going to tentatively go with 'surviving sibling' for the boy who I've never heard of.
Ah, the picture (tv freeze frame?) is about the dead kids from the teaser! Poor dead kids.
Elena has a friend! I don't think I've heard of her, either. The friend has a grandmother who thinks that the friend is psychic. Given that we are in a world with vampires, she could be.
Thank you, friend, for confirming Elena's name for me!
And the friend's name is 'Bonnie'. Never heard of her. Will she die? Only time will tell.
When Elena smiles, she really reminds me of Teri Hatcher back from when she was on Lois and Clark.
Bonnie predicts that Elena will have a happy year with no dark times. Sadly for Bonnie's record as a psychic, Elena is a lead character on a vampire show.
The bird (raven or crow?) that was hit by Bonnie's car appears to be fine. Ooo, maybe this is one of those vampire stories where they can turn into animals!
Elena broke up with a sports player of some kind. Football? And she has a blonde friend who hugs her and says "oh, my god". Have not heard of either of these characters, either.
Blonde girl is Caroline and I get the feeling that Elena doesn't actually like her much.
It looks like Elena's... brother? Is handing out drugs to the student body. Maybe some prescription drugs that he's getting because of the family tragedy?
Ah, "Elena's little brother", thank you, random girl who does drugs and has a violent boyfriend.
It looks like the vampires here are also gifted with hypnosis. So, things are looking pretty sweet for vamps in the universe of TVD.
Bonnie is mostly amusing me. I like her so far. Elena, too (on the like. Not so much on the 'amusing' front).
Ooo, Elena charges into the boys' bathroom to confront her little brother about his druggie habits? She's a fierce big sis.
And I've got a name for the brother - Jeremy.
Elena is like a tiny little fireball there. Awesome.
Oh, hi, pretty! I see why the girls all went speechless and were tracking him. Very cute.
There's that bird again! On Elena's parents' tombstone this time.
Elena's resemblance to Teri Hatcher grows more pronounced the more I watch her.
So, vampires - they can make their own fog in this universe, too?
Elena does babble on when she's nervous. It's endearing (I suspect it's meant to be, but it works). Stefan continues cute. I still don't remember if he's the good vampire brother or the bad one. But he's being set-up as the good one, so he's probably the bad one.
He didn't want her to see his bloodlust (it looks like they show it by having the white of their eyes get bloodshot). Doesn't want to bite her - leaves instead.
They have chemistry.
Wait, maybe he is the good one. He's talking about losing control and burying things instead. Also, apparently the male narrator. Did not connect his voice-over entirely until I saw him writing. So, it could be that his intro stuff was all on the level.
"I'm simply not able to resist her."
Jeremy seems to have a romantic thing for the girl that he gives drugs to (and who has a violent boyfriend). And she's the sister of Elena's ex-boyfriend? Possibly. Ah, she and Jeremy actually slept together. Which she seems ashamed of. Wow, there's a lot going on in this show that doesn't have anything to do with the vampire brothers' love triangle.
Ah, Stefan and Elena are bonding over writing journals. Cute.
Looks like the 'must invite a vampire in explicitly' rule is in effect in this universe.
The ex finally gets a name! Matt. He does still seem pretty broken-up and concerned about Elena.
Stefan makes his exclusive interest in Elena very clear. Barely even looked over at the other girls.
Uncle Stefan - does sound like there's a genuine blood connection, then. The real nephew is playing uncle for the town.
Ah, I love this song ("Running Up That Hill").
Oh, good! They're already showing pictures of the Elena actress as Katherine, so I'm less 'spoiled' for the show than I thought.
And now Stefan is showing off his super-hearing.

Nice scene between Elena and Stefan. I think that he's the good vampire brother at this point. He's coming across as very genuine to me.
Aw, did Vicki just get killed? That's a shame. I was interested in her.
Oh, yay! Not dead! Though maybe this means that she's going to become a vampire? Not sure how they have it working in this universe yet. But I'm glad she's not dead (yet?).
Damon. This would be the "family [Stefan] doesn't talk to", I assume. And the crow appears to be a familiar of some kind, not a shape-shifted form. And Damon is the big brother. Interesting.
Vamp-on-vamp violence. Also, kinda bulgy face veins going on when Stefan is being tempted by the idea of going out for non-animal blood.
Huh, the rings they wear protect them from the sunlight. There was a ring in Buffy like that (Angel destroyed it).
Has a lot of set-up for the future and the big 'it' couple of the show (I feel safe in assuming that this is what Elena and Stefan are) appear to have a lot of chemistry and quite a bit in common. Not a bad pilot at all.
