Things of Awesome: Yuletide Recs

butterflyThe Yuletide Secret Santa is open now (for those who don't know, it's for obscure fandoms -- or, it's supposed to be. I'm pretty sure that Merlin was obscure when it was first requested, but I doubt it would count if the requests were being put in today!).
So, I've skimmed through and read some of the stories and have recs for interested people:
* Her Rightful Place: A Devil Wears Prada fic from Emily's point of view. It has Paris clothes and a white cat named Westwood. The Emily voice is absolutely perfect.
* Two fics from the "Young Wizards" universe by Diane Duane. All the Worlds is a story of snippets of Nita and Kit's life; while Terminus is a really sweet story of two pairs of things beginning.
* Two fics from the "Swordspoint" universe by Ellen Kushner. An Anatomy of the World has a way that Alec and Richard may have met, while I Corinthians 13 is about how they loved.
* Through a Glass Darkly is a Hancock fic about Mary, Ray, Hancock, that superhero thing, and wanting things to work out. It's very delicately-written. Very good.
* Release -- how Jonas' community (in The Giver) deals after his disappearance. The very existence of 'Giver' fic makes me bounce and this fits so well with how the book was written.
* The two Mary Poppins fics that most stuck with me were Overture, in which Bert is the keeper of imagination and there's only one Mary Poppins, and Wind in the East, where Bert first meets Mary when he's nine and the wind is blowing for him.
* There are twenty-three Merlin fics (you see what I meant up above, yes?). That Shall Achieve the Sword marries this Merlin into the Malory version (or at least makes it feed into it) while keeping all our Merlin characters perfectly in character. I've saved the others to read later (because, you know, twenty-three).
* There are also a ton of Psych fics, only, unlike Merlin, I think that this may double the amount of Psych fics on the internet (note: joking, though there is a lot less good Psych fic out there than good Merlin fic, especially of the variety that I prefer -- BFFs being shipped together. I'm always wanting more Shawn/Gus). First up, there's In Some Cultures, Pineapple is an Aphrodisiac, which is a short and sweet story about Shawn being Shawn with Gus. In Nothing You Can Know That Isn't Known, Henry realized that it's exactly what it looks like. Then we have the ultra-meta Gus Goes For the Gold Star, where Gus does Yuletide. Yes, the same Yuletide that this whole post is about. Yes, it's just as awesome as it sounds. Also, Shawn is of the firm belief that all fanfic should end with kissing. We also have Deck the Halls with Glowing Deer, where Shawn's deepest, most abiding desire is to have a hippopotamus for Christmas and Gus almost trips over a wiseman. There's also The Curious Case of That Time with the Thing, in which Shawn doesn't think that he'll ever run off to Borneo again... but if he did, Gus would come with him.
* For Red Dwarf, we have His Hologram Lover!, where every time Rimmer called Lister 'an insubordinate lowlife with the personal hygiene of a mentally deficient infant baboon', he was really saying 'I love you'.
* Rome fic! We have The Aeneid, where everyone knows that Vorenus the Elder is dead (especially if Caesar's spies are around) and Pullo doesn't get married. In Miles Fortunae Pullo asks Decima to measure out another handspan of life for Vorenus.
* Hamlet fic! Yay! In The Wait on the Battlements, Horatio's duty is forever to Hamlet. We also have The Arithmetic of Memory, where Horatio watches and hopes and mourns.
* In You're the Cream in My Coffee (a Singin' in the Rain fic), Cosmo attempts to move out of Don's house and Don would totally get him an elephant, if he wanted one, and they aren't losing each other, but gaining Kathy.
* Slings and Arrows fic! We have Five Times Geoffrey Really Should Have Admitted That Darren Is a Fucking Genius, in which Darren would argue that there is no such thing as bad publicity and Geoffrey has to draw the line when said publicity is about a grandmother being gored by a goat.
* White Christmas -- in Temptation, Bob thinks that Phil has plenty of 'it'.

Honestly, this is the only buddy show I know of where the primary slash pairing isn't the buddies. I have no problem with Shawn/Lassiter, even though I don't personally see it -- there are lots of fandoms where I may not ship the most popular pairing, but the fact that Shawn/Lassiter seems to have become so much more popular than Shawn/Gus -- the buddies, the stars of the show -- really bothers me a lot. I'd like to post about it one of these days, but I'm afraid of starting a big wankfest.

Date: 2008-12-25 04:33 pm (UTC)They do. They fit so well together. They have this perfect give-and-take geeky boys dynamic. I've slashed them since the pilot (the 'breaking into Gus' apartment' scene).
Honestly, this is the only buddy show I know of where the primary slash pairing isn't the buddies. I find it baffling, too. I can't think of any other fandom where the show is so strongly a buddy show that doesn't have the numbers, fic-wise. I mean, yes, Shawn totally flirts with Lassiter, too, because Shawn flirts with every single person walking the face of the Earth, but we've seen, time and again, that his biggest emotional tie is Gus ("Gus Walks Into a Bank" would have caused an explosion of fic in any other fandom that had a buddy pairing).
The actors play so well off of each other, too (I mean, the singing Psych-Outs, man!).
I really need to finish my Shawn/Gus vid.
