So, that does exactly what it says on the tin. I know that some people on my flist were wondering how the cut scene from the dvds would fit into the farewell scene between the Doctor and Rose at Bad Wolf Bay.
(if that won't play, try it at the imeem site)
I have to agree with Russell on how bad the bit of TARDIS looks. I do really miss having one line in particular not in the episode proper ("The Doctor, in the TARDIS, with Rose Tyler. Just as it should be."). The sound could be a bit better, but part of that is the sound that was available in the deleted scene itself.

Date: 2008-12-11 04:26 am (UTC)Yeah... that is really not the most aesthetically pleasing piece of coral they could have found. I'd always pictured it as bigger.
It's interesting, though; I've reconciled myself to the ending of JE (mind, I still tend to prefer alternate fic-type resolutions, but in the context of what's actually possible in the show, this was better than I had any right to expect) but that line about genocide still kind of rubs me the wrong way.
It's not even that I'm resenting a dubious and rather hypocritical attitude towards wiping out the Daleks on Ten's part-- I do get that he's a wee bit messed up just now. But that whole presentation of Ten II as a danger that needs to be watched is just bizzarely at odds with the 'don't you see what he's trying to give you' bit.

Russell is so frustrated about that on the commentary. "It's daft! It looks like a bit of an old prop!" It's really rather adorable. I feel so bad for him.

I think that it really works best when taken with what he says directly after -- that this is the mind-set that he was in post-Time War, so he already knows that this is something that Rose can fix. That Rose fixes just by being Rose. Because Nine goes from semi-suicidal to embracing life fast after he meets Rose (compare with Ten still being somewhat suicidal throughout most of S3). Ten II might be dangerous... if there wasn't Rose. But Rose makes him better.
It's still totally a double-standard in the sense that he's not willing to forgive himself (any version of himself -- his actions in JE speak to him loathing the still-fully Time Lord version of himself for being a monster as well) for something that he is willing to forgive Rose for (PotW) -- not just forgive, but praise.

Date: 2008-12-12 07:30 pm (UTC)But "here, take this one, he's broken, I mean, better" just scans oddly.
But then, RTD did apparently know and was bothered by the fact that the writing of this scene was awkward as hell, so.

Date: 2008-12-12 01:32 am (UTC)I always pictured it as smaller--like the little piece that the Doctor found and "breathed" back into life--I think it was the end of season 1? It's all dead and he finds one little living piece. That's how I always imagined it in my head--like a tiny piece of crystal.

Date: 2008-12-11 04:48 am (UTC)It sort of drags the scene out a bit long, doesn't it? Though I too love the "Doctor and Rose in the TARDIS" line.
I'm not sure how I would have reacted if that had been in the original broadcast. I was confused enough at the time as it was. :D It doesn't exactly make things ALL that much happier, though it would certainly be comforting to know that Ten II and Rose could go off and start their own adventures.

Yeah. It does. I can totally understand why they cut it.

It gives us more of Ten putting on a brave face (though it's even more obvious in the extended version that that's what he's doing, I think). I liked having another two-Doctor and Rose scene shot from a different angle.

Date: 2008-12-11 12:45 pm (UTC)That's part of why I DO wish they'd kept it, because I felt we didn't get ENOUGH of that from Tennant's performance, the script. So having more of that really reinforced what I felt wasn't nearly strong enough originally.

Then there's that!!!

Date: 2008-12-12 08:46 pm (UTC)That would have been nice. Has anyone found any Easter eggs on the S4 dvds yet?

I half-suspect it might've gotten a treatment from the mill had the footage not been cut.

Date: 2008-12-11 12:42 pm (UTC)Sigh. Yeah, I still have some issues overall with the execution of the scene in its entirety (it was much better than previous attempts, but I still don't think Rusty quite got it), but I'll never not be happy with what we did get.
Oops, forgot ... thanks so much for doing this. I know I'd mentioned wanting to do this, but with time lately slipping away, I don't know when I would have had a chance, so thank you. :D

Date: 2008-12-12 01:01 am (UTC)I am in complete agreement with you. It's odd because the added bit makes the whole thing more poignant, but also more understandable.
Weeeell, as understandable as it could be given that they should have spent some more time on Ten.5 and Rose together to make the whole thing plausible. Bless David and Billie for trying to pull it off anyway!

Date: 2008-12-12 08:49 pm (UTC)Yeah. Complaining about that is like when people wonder what the BBC will do when the Doctor 'runs out' of regenerations. Dude, they'll throw in a one-line explanation and then go on with their lives. It's not going to be an issue, unless the current showrunner thinks that milking the 'possibility' of the Doctor really dying would get more attention and be more dramatically interesting.

Date: 2008-12-12 08:53 pm (UTC)Exactly. I get why they deleted, but I'm glad that they included on the dvd, because a lot of it does fit the moment.
Though I would have liked it even more if you'd included the Confidential verison of the kiss, as well. *vbg*
Yes, Awesome!Kiss is Awesome. *thinks about a re-edit* Hmm...

Date: 2008-12-12 11:52 pm (UTC)And thank you, thank you for "restoring" the scene. I downloaded it for frequent re-watching. For me, just knowing that they're not stranded in a "normal" life, makes it all so much better. Definitely the Doctor and Rose in the TARDIS, as it should be.

Date: 2008-12-13 07:25 am (UTC)I do enjoy the majority of the scene, but since the episode was already so much over time, I see why they cut it down.
