Does anyone know if there's a place that keeps track of the clothing colors? I noticed that Clark was wearing the blue t-shirt last night and I was wondering if the primary choice of color says anything about where the character is being placed (emotionally, character-context-wise, etc). I know that colors in general are very important and focused on in Smallville, particularly the three primary colors (for Superman-eske stuff) and green/black.

ETA: If no one has done such a thing, I'm half-tempted to do it myself.

I believe there's been features on the DVD emphasising how much attention they pay to things like the clothing and look of the show. Probably more than the writing *g*

I'm not sure if there's a site or anything for keeping track of it though...

Hee. Well, you know, they stick with what they know they're good at.

I know a lot of fans wish that he would change his red jacket! It's kind of the opposite of Bts where Buffy rarely wore the same clothes twice, whereas SV seems to try and reuse them more. In moments like him rescuing the little boy in the season 4 finale, the jacket is meant to represent a cape.

Lex used to mostly wear black and purple. And for the first three seasons, Lana would wear pink. Clark is red and blue of course

Clark almost always wears blue or red, unless he is hopped up on the bad kryptonite: then he wears black. I noticed that pretty early on, and it's never varied for an ep that I've seen. (well, i think he wears a black tux once, but even the few times I thought oh, he's not wearing a blue/red shirt, he had a blue jacket or outer red plaid shirt, etc.)

I was wondering whether the specific choice of blue versus red meant anything. The blue shirt with the red jacket looks a bit more Superman-y. The show is really huge about their colors. Such a bright show. Supernatural's more muted tone is such a contrast to it.

Check out [livejournal.com profile] svtimeline. I'm pretty sure clothing is one of the things they keep track of.

And I have long, LONG wanted to make my own guide to the colour symbolism (and other visual symbolism) of Smallville. I geek out over it all the time. I've got a couple of essays about colour archived somewhere--I'll try and dig them out. The clothing choices nearly always have significance. They're very deliberate.

Ah! Thank you. You are terrific.

I would be very interested in reading those. Someone linked me to a 'Chlois' site and they made a big deal out of Clark wearing blue with Chloe, which made me wonder about when he wears the bright blue t-shirt versus the red, and also about Pete and now Lois wearing yellow in notable scenes (like Clark's birthday party!).

Hmm. It's proving harder than I anticipated to find those essays. I changed computers recently and am missing all my old bookmarks... but I haven't forgotten about it and will try to find you links soon.

Btw, your rewatch and interest in colour symbolism is really really making me wish I had the time to rewatch and make my visual symbolism dictionary. *pines* If I ever win Tattslotto, I will retire and make that my life's work. Imagine being able to do fannish things ALL DAY! *daydreams*

I love colors and trying to place them in relation to characters and themes. The most interesting shows always some extra visual treats to try and figure out.

That really would be the ultimate life.

I actually was drawn to your journal (I'm a n00b looking for some LJ friends!) because of all the Smallville stuff. I <3 Smallville! Unfortunately, I don't have the time to watch every new episode so we rent it on netflix and I'm hopelessly behind. Someday soon I want to have a Smallville marathon and catch up! I can't yet though because I'm watching it with someone who takes his grand ol time, watching one episode here and one episode there. Drives me insane!

Anyways, that's a really good question you posted. If you don't ever find a place that has kept track of the clothing colours, I'd be very interested to see what you end up recording.

It's really nice to meet you! Smallville is a whole lot of fun and I'll definitely be keeping track of the interesting things that I notice about the episodes as I rewatch them.
