Oh, I'm so amused, because before this season aired, I thought that Rose would be mentioned once or twice and then the Doctor (and the show) would move on.
Instead, Rose Tyler has managed to be the driving force of both the emotional and the plot-arc narrative this year, despite not actually being present.
Because, not only is she why the Doctor's so very depressed, she's also the reason for the Master's return.
Rose Tyler created Jack's immortality, made him the future Face of Boe. Jack's immortality -- the TARDIS trying to shake him off -- is what landed the Doctor and co. at the end of the universe, thus releasing the Master. Bad Wolf still reverberates. Rose Tyler shook the galaxy.
It was all set in place when Rose decided to travel with the Doctor -- after that, every choice that she made brought Bad Wolf closer and closer, made it more and more likely. But Jack (and now Jack has officially appeared in three more episodes than we'd thought, plus got tons more mentions -- yay! Jack's importance to the Universe of Who has easily been doubled) appears in The End of the World and we see the Moxx of Balhoun telling him that 'this is the Bad Wolf scenario'. It is! Rose Tyler has arrived.
She's so epic! I love that about her.
