God Emperor of Dune
Mar. 25th, 2003 03:04 amI feel so incredibly sorrowful for Leto, who gives up so much for humanity's survival.
"A universe of surprises: that is what I pray for."
I'm surprised by people who say that Leto's vision isn't clear in the mini-series of Children of Dune. He only says that bit about 'saving the desert' once, to the Jacurutu chick. He tells Stilgar that the desert will die. And that the Fremen will go through the crucible.
And he tells Jessica exactly what he plans. What he works for. A universe of surprises, where the future can't be shaped or destroyed by any one person.
And he knows the sacrifices that he must make. Of course, he doesn't come face to face with them until he meets Hwi.
I've been thinking of Ghani's words, "He lays his head in my lap and asks me to help him find a way to die." In a way, Ghani is the one who helps him to die. It is because of the poem he wrote after Ghani's death, and the fact that he kept a strand of her hair with 'a moonflower she brought him once' that makes Siona realize that he's vulnerable to love.
Of course, not all of him dies. He says that 'a pearl of awareness' will live on in each of the sandtrout. Which, again with the making me wish I could do something for him. He's probably the most tragic fictional character that I can think of. There may be some out there that are more so, but if so, I haven't seen/read/heard of them.
And poor Nayla, loyal to the last. True believer to the last.
I love the Chapterhouse Duncan. I enjoy most of the other Duncans. I hate the God Emperor Duncan. They're so close to the same, but the circumstances make each of them so different. GE Duncan makes me want to... smack him hard, force him to experience a fraction of what Leto has gone through... something, anything, that will snap him out of his hideous self-involvement.
I almost want them to do an adaption of the book, preferably by the same people who did Children, but then I think about how Jessica Brooks, the actor Ghani, would be the most appropriate person to play Siona, since she's supposed to look just like her but for the eyes. And then I really want to cry, because I think seeing an image of Ghani as the one who brings the end to Leto would be truly horrible. Just utterly evil and it would make me cry so much.
*sigh*
It's such a fascinating book.

I just started Dune, and am already craving the final book.
