Short thoughts on some S1 Angel eps
Sep. 21st, 2003 02:27 pmWent to my dad's this weekend and brought the S1 DVDs for Angel (which is one of the series that we're watching from the beginning).
Finally got the chance to watch three episodes that I hadn't seen yet - She, Eternity, and To Shanshu in L.A.. Oh! And I finally got the brother to tell me what bugs him about Buffy&Angel - it's because the vampires don't feel right. He likes the 'classic' Dracula type (note: show him BvD next time he visits). So after we talked that out, I got him to watch the first four episodes of Angel (guessing that it would be more to his taste than Buffy) and he liked them. Didn't love them, but he definitely enjoyed watching the show.
I'm not sure why people dislike She so much. I mean, adorable Wesley (this is the 'faithful servant' episode! Eee!). Angel having a moment with Dennis. There's some seriously adorable stuff here. And yeah, the actress could have been better, but she was hardly Kristin Kruek.
And I like the contrast between what She means and what Buffy's S7 Him means. 'She' is used as a protest against the main baddies calling the women of their dimension 'it'. It's taking back their personhood. 'Him' is used to depersonalize the male, because he doesn't matter as anything but the object of desire.
I adored Eternity. And Rebecca? Way hot. I thought the story was something that made sense to be covered as part of the exploration of the dangers of adult life that S1 centered around. It made sense that the actress afraid of growing old would latch onto Angel that way. I really liked their chemistry.
To Shanshu in L.A. made me cry. It was when Wesley was going into the building. I was seriously terrified, because I knew he was going to get majorly hurt and I was just crying and telling him not to go in.
And the relationship between the three of them was so sweet.
In other news, Kryptonite came on the radio when I was driving home. Now, my best experience with this is the brilliant Rhade vid to it, but when I was listening to it, I couldn't help but wonder what a Buffy&Xander vid to it would be like. There's certainly enough material out there to make the vid.
