Have given up reviewing and given into the desire to just rewatch Fellowship. After this, I will undoubtably go straight to bed.
Or, you know, stay up until morning and rewatch Towers. One of those.
*sigh*
Frodo is so pretty.
And it's so odd... watching it this time around, it's so odd to think that the first time, I couldn't tell Merry and Pip apart. They're such separate people to me now that I can't believe I was ever confused.
And interesting note: Gandalf won't utter the language of Mordor in the Shire, but is willing to do it in Elrond's Council when need comes. A statement of his priorities or does it just show us that he didn't need to invoke Black Speech in order to get Frodo's attention?

Date: 2004-01-09 03:24 am (UTC)It was only when they were separated in RoTK that I could tell them apart. And now I look back and wonder why it took so long for me to see the differences.
I have taken the liberty of friending you as I found I was checking your lj daily for any new and wonderful pearls of wisdom. I hope you don't mind.

Date: 2004-01-09 04:23 am (UTC)I know. I mean... accent. And yet, that didn't help me at all in the beginning, but now... accent. I suspect that the accent is part of the reason that Pippin is almost my first favorite hobbit (even the best accent can't bump Frodo).

I definitely don't. And that's really neat to know. Thank you.

Date: 2004-01-09 04:32 am (UTC)Well, it would only be a bit peculiar if you had read the books beforehand (you only began reading them back then, didn't you?), seeing as their characters are so different and they serve rather different purposes within the story. Or, of course, you just have a bad memory for faces. & ;-)
My sister? Smartest girl ever, but throw three bearded men into a movie, and she gets really confused about who's who. *g*

Date: 2004-01-09 05:12 am (UTC)I had to go back and check what Pippin's accent was (hangs head in shame - but it is quite a mild one).
All of the hobbits only really came alive for me in the RotK, it's like a button was pressed and everything fell into place (I've never read the books). I'd grown a lot more attached to Sam and Frodo with the extended DVD version of the second film, I thought their parts dragged when I watched the film at the cinema but on DVD, wow!
But yeah, I am getting a lot more enjoyment out of the original films now I've got Merry and Pippin separate in my head and not just as happy-go-lucky-plucky-can't-be-told-apart comic relief! I can begin to better appreciate their journeys within this wonderful story.

Date: 2004-01-09 05:24 am (UTC)Yes, it's nice to see that they have their own personal journeys of growth. They Aren't Just Comic Relief. It's nice. And once I did see, I now see it all the time. Again with the nice.
(Dude, and Pippin's also the one with green eyes. How did I not noticed that the first viewing of Fellowship? I love green-eyed men.)
I see. & :-)
Date: 2004-01-09 05:55 am (UTC)While I adored the whole hobbit clan concept and had thus grouped Meriadoc Brandybuck and Peregrin Took into clearly defined niches of Hobbitdom-- despite their entrance as a 2-in-1 prankster pack--, I didn't expect there would be a great depth of character development later...although I took an instant liking to Merry but wanted to smack Pippin half of the time. I was so with Gandalf when he yelled "Fool of a Took!"
As for Tom Bombadil-- him I could deal with but really thought Goldberry was just. Too Much. Loved the Barrowdowns interlude, though, and wish we could've see it in the movie.

I went back to check the colour of his eyes and admitted defeat; I can't just stick this film in and watch selected scenes, I have to watch the whole thing. Ahh, the joys and delight of having every other Friday off of work!

Re: I see. & :-)
Date: 2004-01-09 01:58 pm (UTC)So was I, the first time. Now, though I do go, "Oh, Pip! No!", I can't be mad at him for it. And really, that's one of the events that precipitates Gandalf's turn into Gandalf the White, so it's kinda a good thing he did it.

Yeah, that part might have been neat - as long as the weirdo and his wife weren't in it (wow, I really don't like him. I mean, I hadn't quite realized how much).
