butterflyWhich characters from your various fandoms actually do their jobs well?
I tried to choose characters that I hadn't personally noticed anyone else doing. Also, I limited myself to one per fandom.
1. Xander Harris -- carpenter (Buffy the Vampire Slayer)
After failing at various other jobs, Xander finally finds his niche as a carpenter. And he's good -- after only three months as a temp, he's asked to sign-on full-time and even asked to head up a crew of his own (The Replacement -- early season five). In I Was Made to Love You (season five), we see that he really does care about the work that he's doing. Xander's success as a carpenter is lightly touched on in several episodes, including Flooded (season six) and Storyteller (season seven). In a way, carpentry is the physical equivalent of what Xander does best -- he builds new things and repairs the damage caused by fighting.
2. Daniel Jackson -- archeologist and linguist (Stargate SG-1)
We've seen him figure out in minutes a language that stumped the Tok'ra for years. We've seen his misery over artifacts being moved because 'they were in the way'. His joy at discovering culture after culture of lost knowledge. Daniel cares about what he does and he's good at it -- at the end of the second season, he knew twenty-three languages. We've had a chance to see him at work in too many episodes to name -- he's brilliant and an unconventional thinker.
3. Seamus Harper -- engineer (Andromeda)
A self-taught engineer who can physically tap into the machinery that he wants to play with. Harper grew up with no advantages, on a slave planet where he lived in constant fear of being implanted with something that would eat him from the inside out and go on to kill everyone else he knew. Now that's a self-made man. And he is a genuis when it comes to anything mechanical.
4. Simon Tam -- doctor (Firefly)
A man who is so much a doctor in his soul that he will take time out from doing crime in order to save someone's life, even knowing that the very act could tip someone off. Compassionate and very, very good at what he does -- top 3% of his class, finished his internship early. Gifted. Also, the Best Big Brother Ever.
5. Ray Kowalski -- undercover agent (due South)
Ray's talent as an undercover agent is not founded so much in his ability to mimic as it is in his ability to bamboozle. He flashes and dazzles his charisma in front of you, and you're so distracted that you forget what you were asking him. More than that, he's a good cop with three citations and very effective, if unorthodox, techniques.
