Still reading the Lord of the Rings...
Mar. 30th, 2004 12:56 amStill finding it... really good. Tolkien can be interestingly reserved at interesting times, but the emotion is still there. I think... until I'd read more about his writing process, I didn't get him. Now, I still don't really get all of it, but it's resonating emotionally this time around.
There's one bit that's handled badly that I wish an editor had fixed (Gandalf going all, "I cannot take the Ring! Not to use it for good! Not even touch it!" when he not so long before picked the thing up to chuck it into the fire. This is, I would like to note, something that has been fixed in the movie.), but there's a lot of cool information that a) doesn't get the chance to get covered in the movie and b) that I missed in my 'I hate this man's writing style' read-through.
