Hmm.

Just had a thought about Buffy in Grave. And you know, her 'epiphany' about Dawn comes after she finds out that the world isn't going to end.

So why did she give Dawn the sword?

Maybe because that was all she had left to give. The world was about to end and there was nothing Buffy could do about that. But she could give Dawn a chance to fight.
