So, for the last couple of weeks, it's been a right crowd over here, watching the good crack Sci-Fi Friday. And it's very squeeful, watching with other fans.
Stargate SG-1; Avalon Part Two and Origin
I'd just like to say one thing, straight-out -- Season Nine of SG-1 has made me exceedingly happy so far. I'm half an inch away from shipping Daniel/Vala, think that Cameron is the cutest fanboy in the entire world, and find the new villains both creepy and interesting.
And now, point by point.
To Be Continued -- We've never had a three-parter on SG-1 before. Seeing 'To Be Continued' twice in a row was exhilarating -- it rather reminded of S4 of Angel, where it seemed like half the episodes started right where the previous episode had ended. I like this in a show.
Cameron -- I liked John Crichton. He was my second favorite character on Farscape (Chiana was the first). But I already like Cameron more. I adore his enthusiam for spending time with Daniel and Teal'c. He's fun and interesting and I really look forward to seeing him spark some more with the cast.
Vala -- Oh, my, I adore her. I was never a fan of Aeryn, but I just so adore Vala. She's fun and sexy and tough and smart. And she and Daniel had wicked strong chemistry. I want her to become a regular. I think that would be fun.
Doctor Lam -- So far, I like her. I'm curious about her and looking forward to finding out more.
General Landry -- Finally clicked for me at the end of Origin, when he told Daniel and Vala that he was glad that they were okay and bonded with Mitchell over the grandma thing. He'll definitely be a very different general from Hammond or Jack, and I'm interesting to see how that affects the show.
Daniel -- And, once again, Daniel Jackson has opened the door for a dangerous alien race to attack Earth. That search for knowledge really kicks him in the ass at times. It's rather refreshing, actually, to see that this part of Daniel hasn't changed. A lot of the externals have, but Daniel is still the guy who wants to go and find out more. Just... Daniel! I love Daniel. I really, really love Daniel. Daniel is what made me fall in love with the show. In the end, I'm really there for his journey.
Teal'c -- And the plot thickens. I'm actually finding all this post-freedom stuff a lot more interesting that the pre-freedom stuff, which is good, because I thought that was really, really boring. I love that Teal'c really has bonded and become part of the Tau'ri in his time with them. I adore his very clear bond with Daniel and the beginnings of a new, respectful relationship with Cameron.
Jack -- I was really happy with Jack's scene with Daniel. Yeah, he seemed exhausted, but since I don't think he belongs behind a desk and I don't think that being there is actually good for him, it fits. It fits for where his character was heading at the end of season eight. He's not a failure, but he really isn't suited for where the military has put him.
Doctor Lee -- I have been thrilled to see him again. He first showed up in S5 and his character has just gotten better (and funnier) with each episode he's been in. I hope that he reoccurs again, soon.
The Orii -- Creep me out. It actually makes a lot of sense for the show to go there. They've defeated the false gods, who used stolen tech and flashy stuff to intimidate people into believing them. The next logical step (especially since we've known about powerful energy beings since S3) is to show us beings who do have true powers. And to explore what Daniel said in Abyss when he was ascended -- "Because for all I can do... I'm no more qualified to play God than the Goa'uld are." And it does make sense that the Orii personally hit our guys religious buttons in a way that the Goa'uld don't. Personally, I'm very interested in where they go from here.
Plus, SG-1 is just a lot of fun right now. I'm enjoying the ride.
