YES. It was ridiulous whiplash. Given that he couldn't even admit to ANYONE why Eliot was so important to him, and then he jumps in headfirst with Alice? (The slasher interpretation is that he was obviously that hurt by Eliot turning him down so he's looking for solace instead of real love. But I don't think the show actually means it that way.)
And we don't, at any point, really see Q attempt to process that Julia has been taken by a monster, too. She was the one person this season that we've actively seen trying to help, even if her attempts weren't too successful. And now that support has been abruptly kicked out from under him and instead has become another source of worry and fear. I mean, that's the main thing that changed in between Q saying 'no' to Alice in 4x11 and him reaching out to her in 4x12. But we've been kept so much out of Q's head this season!
I agree, it does make me feel like it's going for the trope and since Alice has already died once, I think it will be Q. And if Eliot and Julia are only recently de-monstered, then Alice is the obvious character who has the capacity to see Q die and react. None of the other characters care enough about him.
Yeah, essentially my thought process there.
I could not agree more with this and this is what I'm struggling to reconcile. Most of the season the writing has been SO TIGHT and so connected. And then suddenly we have these two episodes where Q's motivations suddenly change, and 1 episode for Margo, and I just...don't understand? We were supposed to be building to a huge emotional payoff that you would think would be ramped up in the penultimate episode. Instead, caring about Eliot wasn't even mentioned. Yet it's been the DRIVING FORCE for both of them the entire season???
Yeah, and the timing! The only thing I can think of is that if they'd shown Q and Margo's desperation the way they have most of the season, maybe they figure selling the Monster as more sympathetic than his sister would be too jarring for the audience? But at this point, it feels more like stalling because it's not time to bring Eliot back yet instead of how Q and Margo would actually be reacting, which is never a great feeling to have while watching a show. Hopefully 4x13 tonight will reconcile 4x12 and the emotional tension that the rest of the season had.
