THIS SHOW!

Oh, goodness, this show! It kills me.

Okay, trying to take this in some kind of sequence:

1. lol, Stefan

Basically, Stefan continues to amuse and delight me. He's so... idek. The only things he currently seems to care about at all are a) Damon and b) sticking it to Klaus. When you pare away Stefan's humanity, that's what remains - Damon and Stefan's petty streak.

I'm amused that Elena got to slap Stefan for being a jerk this time. Oh, how the tides have turned and whatnot.

Related - why on earth do the dead witches hate Damon but seem to have nothing against Stefan? What is up with that?

2. Alaric's ring is dying

This is the second time it hasn't worked quite right (Damon noticed it taking longer than normal to work in 3x04). So, why isn't it working? Does Alaric just die too often? Is it because it's old? Is it some other thing that will get revealed?

3. the fourth coffin

One possibility - Esther's body. We know that she's not a vampire and that her spirit is speaking to people, but her body might be in stasis in the special coffin. Maybe Klaus didn't kill her. Maybe he just nearly killed her, pretended to bury her, and then dug her up again.

...okay, maybe not.

4. Reveals and twists

I like that Elena and Damon mostly confided in each other again at the end of the episode. Damon held something back re: Stefan's plans - he didn't tell her that he knows where the coffins are, so there's that. But he told her what he felt like he could tell her without jeopardizing the current delicate arrangement that he's trying to work with Stefan.

*hands*

It's a tough position for Damon to be in. He's stuck between Stefan and Elena and is being tugged both ways. He feels a strong loyalty in each direction.

omg kiss

...

*cough*

sorry, not there yet

Like I was saying, Damon feels the desire to be loyal to both Stefan and Elena but that's currently somewhat mutually exclusive. What to do? He tells Elena what he feels like he can tell her without telling her what Stefan most doesn't want her to know.

5. Jeremy and Tyler

Oh, Tyler. Oh, Jeremy. Oh, boys. Okay, Jeremy was really hot in this episode. And Elena kinda made me go all, "Oh, honey, again?" but she's his big sister and this is completely and totally in character for her. She wants to keep him safe and he gave her the idea, so she's sending him away and hopefully out of danger (and Klaus did promise not to go after him, so the danger that she's keeping him out of is mostly of the 'not letting him help' kind).

Tyler is getting set up to potentially fight against his desire to have automatic (sired) faith in Klaus. Tyler has both succeeded and failed at fighting against himself in previous challenges, so I don't know which way he's going to go this time. Tyler's kinda a wild card in the way most of the characters aren't. It's exciting.

6. Elena v. Klaus

I love how completely not scared she is of Klaus. She gets more scared of Klaus's random minions than she does of Klaus. She just faces him down coolly, knowing that she's probably the safest person in the world when it comes to him because he wants her alive more than he wants most other things in the world. Elena rocks. I love her. And I love her scenes with Klaus.

(and watching this with Homecoming having recently been rewatched, the difference between Elena's lack of fear of Klaus and Katherine's fear definitely leaps into contrast)

kiss now?

soon

Also, I don't know how Klaus manages to tug on my heartstrings while he's currently re-daggering his sister that I adore. How does he do that?

okay, now the kiss

7. KISS! KISS! DID YOU SEE THAT?

Still waiting on the Elena-driven kiss (which I wouldn't be expecting this soon anyway), but... damn. That was...

Yeah.

"You know what... if I'm going to feel guilty about something, I'm going to feel guilty about this."

AND THEN HE KISSED HER.

12 seconds long, btw (just for the full-on liplock). And then lingering looks afterward.

It's everything you wanted, it's everything you don't
It's one door swinging open and one door swinging closed
Some prayers find an answer
Some prayers never know
We're holding on and letting go

And that look at the end after he says, "Good night."

I'm going to go rewatch that part. A few times.

The only thing I like about the witches' inexplicable hatred of Damon is that it's consistent. Clearly it wasn't a statement that Stefan is a magical pure soul and Damon is awful, because Stefan is now in "I recently murdered several truckloads of people" mode and they still hate on Damon. lol.

The witchy hate of Damon is odd. Considering, that yes, Stefan may have not associated with witches the way Damon has, but in terms of atrocities, it's not as if Stefan was knitting pillows for the last century and a half.

Plus, Damon protected Emily's family. One figures that was an active role, and he made SURE they were all right. And he didn't kill Bree until recently. So.

WTF?

Elena is so WONDERFUL when she faces down Klaus.

Re: Alaric's ring. I have to wonder - it wasn't used a lot for many years, now it is, and maybe it needs to be recharged and keyed to him specifically?

Damon is the other option for Elena and Alaric. They try reason, and compromise, and then they stand aside and say 'fix this.' Interesting that they are now at this point.

And, oh, how gentle was Damon with Jeremy? He's honest with him, careful in his own way, and he honestly does LIKE him. <3s.

KISS.

Yes, I want an explanation - so far Damon hasn't done anything that would warrant that much hatred. Except being way more tricksy than his brother - which. Hmm.

Stefan is the worst planner EVER. Damon is FAR more adept. OH WITCHES, WHY PISS OFF THE BROTHRE THAT PLANS DECADES IN ADVANCE?

Damon and Jeremy are so wonderfully complex. And, if they don't bring Jeremy back, I can see them meeting up sometime in the future. Damon would check on him. He WOULD. Pack.

I think that yes, it could be that the ring is worn out, and needs to be tied to a specific bloodline.

Damon and Elena - it will likely not LAST, because the show seems bent on Stefan and Elena. BUT, I will enjoy it.
