I think that one thing that helped me buy it was the fact that Ric had his hand on Damon's chest. He was touching him - Damon tried to move around him, and Ric put his hand out. That said 'I am trying the easy way then I might use more force.' So Damon's thinking was 'okay, you are now an obstacle to dealing with a danger to the pack. You will survive this. Move.'
It was quicker than arguing with Ric (and Elena) and yes, short sighted, but the touching sold it.
