1x12 - Unpleasantville

Elena is trying to figure out if Stefan knew the mysterious vampire that stood in the road (hey, he does seem to have other vampire friends - such as Lexi - whereas Damon is vampire-friend bereft at the moment, so it's not such a bad call). But when Stefan asks for more information on the vamp in question, she's got nothing.

So, Stefan finally gives Elena some vervain to give her to her friends. In some ways, this feels like it took way too long (Elena has known since "Lost Girls", episode six) but it's entirely possible that this was only two or three weeks ago according to the timeline ("Family Ties" to "Haunted" is nine days (3 of which Damon was entombed for). "162 Candles" is a single day. "History Repeating" to "Bloodlines" is four consecutive days), in which a lot of stuff was happening to Elena and Stefan and they didn't have much time to pause for reflection.

"As long as it's in you or on you, a vampire can't control you." Not even a really powerful vampire like Elijah, we find out in "Rose".

"There's another vampire in town, so until we find out who he is and what he wants, we have to be careful." Ah, the subtext in that statement. It kinda implies that the reason that Stefan hasn't given this stuff to Elena to give out her friends is because, well, Damon compelling people isn't a big enough deal (Stefan: ask Caroline about that) but a random vampire is. Stefan is so... consistently inconsistent on the subject of Damon. Because his emotions (particularly guilt) are so involved, I suspect. It's enough for him that Damon isn't hurting Elena and Stefan doesn't mind as much whatever else Damon does as long as it doesn't 'negatively affect' Stefan's life (which releasing Katherine would do). As long as bodies aren't showing up on the news, Stefan seems willing to let things slide without much discussion.

Jeremy hears the doorbell ring and gets up from his sketching to get the pizza, invite the pizza boy vampire in, etc. The usual (honesty saves lives! Just saying). He calls Elena down and she pays the bill. After she gives the guy the money, he backs away from the door, maximizing his 'staring at Elena' time (she looks like Katherine, after all).

Over at the Salvatore place, Damon is going through the library. And by 'going through', I mean that he's tossing the books he doesn't want and letting them hit the floor. Stefan wants to know what he's looking for - Damon isn't interesting in family bonding time.

"Putting Elena in harm's way... that's my concern."
"What are you talking about?"
"I'm talking about Atlanta."
"Oh, yeah. Elena and I had a blast."
"I get it. You're just bitter than one of us gets to be the with person we love and poor Katherine is just out of reach. Plus there's another way for you to get into that tomb. That was Bree said?"
"You're pathetic when you're fishing."
"And you're transparent when you're deflecting."

As with all Stefan-Damon scenes, the two actors sparkle together. I do want to attempt to unpack the scene a little. Now, we didn't actually get to see Elena talking to Stefan about the Atlanta trip - we saw her talking to him about the things that happened before, but not the trip itself. But Elena's explanation could have been as simple as "Damon saved me from the car crash, dragged me to Atlanta for a trip to Bree's bar and a vampire kidnapped me and used me as bait to attack Damon" or it could have been as elaborate as detailing the entire trip. I don't know. It's interesting because Elena wasn't in harm's way - Bree and Lexi's boyfriend only wanted Damon dead (for the murder of Lexi). The most Elena was in danger of was an case of alcohol poisoning. So, again, I have to wonder how much Elena told Stefan - "And Lexi's boyfriend attacked Damon but I was able to convince him not to kill Damon! Plus, I got drunk with Damon and I played pool and that part was actually pretty fun." Stefan might just be making the assumption that 'Damon = danger' which has generally been a safe bet in the past, though he's already seen and acknowledged evidence that Elena seems to be a different case. But he also tends, at this point in time, to flip between guilty acceptance/justification of Damon's actions and wildly assuming that Damon is a hopeless case. It's a complicated relationship.

Also, does Stefan know that Bree is dead? She was friends with Lexi, so she probably knew Stefan. Once he'd found out that Damon and Elena had gone to Atlanta, did he call Bree's bar and find out that she was found with her heart no longer in her chest? But if he knew Bree was dead, I'd think he'd mention it at some point (if only to Elena, to taint her memories of the road trip).

At school, Jeremy has gotten back his paper from Alaric and he has an 'A' on it. Alaric goes on a fishing trip for what Jeremy really believes - he doesn't believe in vampires, but he does know that Mystic Falls has a lot of weirdo deaths. Before Jeremy leaves, Alaric asks if he can take a look at that first-hand source that Jeremy cited and Jeremy is fully willing to hand the journal right over. Alaric is thinking 'score!'.

Elena has given Caroline a vervain necklace. Yes. *cheers*

Caroline is especially pleased with the necklace because 'it will go with everything' and Elena is smiling with the joy of a person who knew her friend well enough to pick something that Caroline would want to wear all the time. When Elena said that it's just a friendship gift, Caroline teases her but seems really happy that Elena's thinking about them and their friendship. When pressed again, Elena thinks of a good reason - she's giving it to Caroline as a blessing on her 'whatever' with Matt (side note: the necklace is pretty cute. It's a delicate silver heart and it fits Caroline's whole... Caroline-vibe. Well picked, Elena). Caroline feels a little weird talking to Elena about Matt, though.

"It's a little weird but... if it's what you and Matt want, it's not about me."

Thus showing that Elena is just as good an ex-girlfriend as Matt is an ex-boyfriend (and that she's being a good friend, too). Caroline is worried though, because she knows that Matt isn't over Elena yet. Elena just thinks it needs time (and she's right).

At the Mystic Grill, Matt is filling out an application for a job. Unforeseen consequence of Tanner's death is that Matt isn't going to be able to get that sports scholarship, and he might be stuck in Mystic Falls. I like that we have these consequences showing up all the time for this stuff. It lends a grounded air of realism to the fantastical world of vampires and whatnot.

Working at the bar is a recent graduate, Ben. Matt looks at Ben and sees his future and it's somewhat discouraging for him.

Elena and Bonnie are eating in the Grill - Elena has just told Bonnie about her adoption.

"The Elena that I know would always want the real truth, good or bad."

Elena heads out to pick up some accessories for the dance and as soon as she's gone, Damon is there to talk to Bonnie. He wants a fresh start. She wants to set him on fire. We learn in her later (S2) conversation with Jeremy that she really doesn't want Damon to know about any weaknesses in her magic and I think we're seeing the birth of that bravado here. We see Grams engage in the same thing a bit later - she's able to drive off Damon and make it seem like she's too tough for him to fight, but after he leaves, we see that it's really taken a lot out of her (and, if Damon had stayed, he might have outlasted her after all).

When the other person is the enemy, that approach does make sense. But once you've become allies with someone, it's good for them to know if you're going to have to drop out of the fight at some point due to lack of strength (but Bonnie doesn't think of Damon as an ally, merely an enemy that she's forced to work with, I think - which, again, is understandable from her point of view).

Ben steps in at this point, to unnecessarily save Bonnie in order to work into her good graces. Damon, of course, could totally take Ben - but he's keeping that low-profile, so he just leaves. Bonnie thanks Ben, he remembers her name and she's, like, in awe of that and there's flirting (sadly, faked on his end).

Elena is heading out to her call when she gets a call from the pizza vampire. While he's freaking her out, he also stalks up behind her car. She drives off - apparently to Stefan's, but they aren't actually talking until the next morning. Maybe she just crashed when she got there, too tired and overwhelmed to talk?

"If he's trying to kill me, why call first?"
"It's because we're predators, Elena. We hunt, we stalk. It's often as exciting as the kill."

They get a whole new set of instincts when they turn, instincts that perfectly fit them out for the new life that their bodies require them to lead - to be able to lock out emotions at first until you've adjusted to your new world view (Damon even says, re: Isobel, that it's the easier road to take) or to translate them into hunger, to want and desire to hunt and kill and drink from humans, to be able to compel to make clean-up easier and to attempt to guard against the rise of the prey hunting you back. I love how much sense it makes. Again, it grounds the vampires in some sense of realism.

Stefan gives Elena the vampire compass. She, naturally, recognizes it as "Jeremy's pocket watch" but Stefan gives her the history. Okay, so Stefan says, "I took it from Damon". In the same sense (as in stealing), that Logan took it from Jeremy... or did Damon give it to him? I mean, I would hope that Damon would be harder to steal from than that. She learns that the Gilbert ancestors were vampire hunters and she asks Stefan if he knew them. He says 'yes' but no more than that.

At the school, Caroline and Matt are painting a sign. He hadn't thought she'd stoop to doing it herself, but she doesn't think anyone else would do it right, so she must. Caroline is, indeed, wearing her necklace. Again, I praise Elena in her choice in picking it out (she seems to know Caroline's tastes better than Bonnie does, given that Caroline thinks that the daywalker ring that Bonnie picked out is ugly - or Bonnie picked something ugly on purpose because she was pissed at Caroline).

Caroline is carefully trying to feel Matt out on the idea of going as dates to the dance, but he can't go - he has work now. They have a bit of rich girl-poor boy tension going on and Caroline hurts his feelings without meaning to.

At the Grill, Jeremy is playing pool when Anna comes up to talk to him. She asks about his paper but she really wants to talk him into hanging out with her. He's doing punch duty at the school dance in order to help his English grades, though. She tries to make a date for the future but Jeremy isn't interested.

Back at Elena's house, they're talking about the crash. Elena has been borrowing Jenna's car and this will continue, as Elena's car has been totaled. Alaric asked Jenna to help chaperon at the dance, so she'll be there (she's already dressed up for it). Elena holds up an apple and looks sullen and decides not to bite it, instead turning to confront Jenna about the adoption. Jenna never thought she'd need to deal with it - Elena's mom was always planning on handling that conversation.

Jenna tells the story - 16 year old pregnant runaway comes to a doctor's office, has a baby and leaves (without the baby). The Gilberts are desperate for kids, so they adopt her. Of course, Jenna doesn't know the bit about how Uncle John was the father. I do find that interesting.

An implication might be found that one of the reasons that Katherine went to Mystic Falls the first time was because it was near to the place where her descendants had ended up moving - or because she was attempting to find the line in question, as she'd gotten wind of it at some point. And that's how the Gilberts, Salvatores, etc. ended up mixed up in all of Katherine's business. I believe that Isobel mentions that Katherine found her - she labels it 'genetic curiosity' because she doesn't know about the doppelgängers. It's likely that Katherine has been checking in on her line from time to time ever since she rediscovered them (in hopes of finding a doppelgänger to replace her?).

At the Salvatore boarding house, Damon is making a list of names - the Founders, I believe:
Benjamin Lockwood, John Gilbert, Honoria Fell, William Forbes (he doesn't feel the particular need to write down his dad's name). Stefan comes into the room and drops their dad's journal in front of Damon. Stefan's already read it, though, he warns Damon, and their dad didn't put anything about Katherine or the tomb into his journal. Stefan offers to help Damon with his 'diabolical plan: the sequel'. Damon is rightfully dubious of this.

"You, help me? I don't know. It seems a little... unnatural."
"I'll do anything to get you out of this town, even release Katherine."

Damon remains suspicious.

"Why would I trust you?"
"See, that's your problem, Damon. You apply all of your shortcomings to everybody else. If history is any indication, there's only one liar among us."

This is such a brazen and bold-faced lie and manipulation that it almost takes the breath away. Hey, Stefan, ever wonder why your brother has trust issues? I don't.

Elena is at her house, getting ready for the dance. She has really big hair and whatnot. Given that she's all about the poodle skirts later in the episodes, it's interesting that she still goes for pants here. Anyway, her vampire compass goes off, signaling that there is a vampire nearby. She finally notices the weird clicking noises and realizes that her compass is telling her stuff. She's alarmed, so she calls Stefan's phone. Damon answers. She asks him a question, he answers without absolutely no beating-around-the-bush or fuss, and she thanks him - for which he says 'welcome' - and they hang up. It's a low-key moment that gets a little buried by the action of the vampire attacking her right afterwards, but it's nice.

As Damon was telling the truth, Stefan is right there to pry away the other vampire before he can bite Elena. The pizza vampire escapes and Elena is pretty freaked by being attacked by a vampire inside her own home (sadly, home is not safe as long as you don't tell all the people you live with the truth. Seriously, Elena!).

Either Stefan or Elena has called Damon over to help with the new vampire menace. Stefan is still dubious about whether or not Damon is in cahoots with the mysterious vampire, though, so I'm actually going to bet on Elena (plus, she did have her phone right on her). Stefan pointedly mentions that the new vampire was invited in and Damon nods, very definitely taking his meaning. He has to be taken care of before he can go after Elena again.

Damon asks Elena if she's up for helping out and she is, though Stefan thinks it's a bad idea (he gets overruled - mostly by Damon pitching the idea to Elena and leaving the choice up to her). Stefan seems a little concerned by the new rapport that Damon has established with Elena.

"I'll be with the two of you. I'll be safe," Elena says. Stefan shoots his brother a look and Damon gives a tiny little shrug. Here, Stefan notices Elena being willing to trust his brother with her safety (and I'm being specific there for a reason). Interestingly, in S2, he doesn't seem to pick up on Elena re-including Damon in the list of people that she cares about (in "The Sacrifice") but he was distracted by the plan of getting the moonstone from Katherine in that, I suppose (Katherine is more distracting than pizza vampires are).

At the dance, Bonnie and Caroline are having fun on the dance floor. Alaric is being chaperon-y, and Elena arrives on Stefan's arm but with Damon in tow. Alaric sees Damon and is distracted by his memories until Jenna arrives to break him out of them. Jenna lets us know that the school also does a '60s dance and a '70s dance. Will we get to see those on screen? They go off to get some punch.

Damon and Stefan head off to do a little recon, and Bonnie and Caroline head over to talk to her. When Elena asks, Caroline says that she's not having fun, but she looked pretty happy on the dance floor (faking it?). Bonnie notices that Damon came to the dance (he is talking quietly to Stefan, who is leaning over to listen - why, I can't imagine, as he has vampiric superhearing). Elena's only reason for Damon being there - 'he wanted to come'. Caroline makes a threesome joke/reference, and Elena just says that if she wants to be with Stefan, Damon is part of the package. She can't kill him. Bonnie and Caroline briefly go blissful over the idea of killing Damon.

Jenna is talking to Alaric about how much better Jeremy has been doing. She is, of course, thrilled. They then move to the topic of Alaric's (un)dead wife. Alaric hopes that he'll find out what happened re: Isobel someday. He's even more hopeful because of the whole 'spotting Damon' thing.

Damon makes an attempt to get into Bonnie's good graces by asking her to dance. I'm not entirely sure of his motivations - is he trying to make friends with Elena's friends? Is he trying to make peace with Bonnie because she's a Bennett witch? I mean, if he just wants to dance, there are lots of girls there who don't have any reason to have a grudge against him. Oh, wait. Witch. Tomb. He wants to try to be in a position to be able to ask Bonnie to help him drop the spell. Duh. Okay, that makes sense.

Damon asks Elena to dance and she turns it into an invitation to Stefan to dance. Pizza vampire is watching, of course.

We find out that Stefan and Damon can't just sense the other vampire. Elena wonders if there are any pictures of Stefan from the '50s. She should ask Damon. Elena talks about the idealized notion of the era and Stefan reminds her of the uglier realities.

Over at the punch table, Jeremy (who is not dressed up) is surprised by Anna (who is also not dressed up, but was also not told the theme or, actually, invited). She tries to charm herself back into his good graces and it works a bit.

At the Grill, Bonnie and Caroline have bailed on the party. When Bonnie admires the hot bartender, Caroline says something tactless and mean about 'washed-up jocks'. Matt hears, of course, since he works there and all. I'd forgotten how often Matt and Caroline inadvertently hurt each other's feelings in the start of their relationship.

Back at the dance, Stefan has stopped searching over Elena's shoulder for the vampire and is actually dancing and - *gasp* - having some fun. Damon watches from the sidelines. Luckily, he has a distraction in the form of Alaric, who is also going a fishing expedition this episode. They're very popular. Damon declares himself Stefan's legal guardian. It amuses me. But it's a better excuse for him being there than 'he just wanted to come'. We learn that Stefan hasn't been back to school since Alaric started there. Alaric pushes too hard, Damon gets suspicious, and Alaric backs off. Hey, Alaric, maybe you should have tried flirting. It works for Damon.

Bonnie tells Caroline to be 'bold and fearless' when it comes to Matt. Caroline turns it back on her and Bonnie agrees, going up to talk to Ben. The conversation is actually really cute (Bonnie-Ben). It's a shame that it's all fake from his end of things. Caroline tries to talk to Matt and ends up finding out what she said to hurt him.

At the dance, Anna is helping Jeremy with punch duty. She then tries to ask him to lend the journal to her. She's not thrilled to find out that he's given it to Alaric. When he starts to get weirded out by how obsessed she is with the 'stupid journal', she goes vamp face (with frustration?) and he notices. She leaves before he can ask any more questions.

It's a school dance, the music tells us. Oh, really? I had not noticed.

Stefan apologizes for her involvement and she says: "It's my choice. I decided to be here, so I don't want you apologizing for it any more." You tell him, Elena! After much coaxing, she finally gets him to show her a move from the '50s, though he promises her that it'll be the only one.

Anna and pizza vampire aka Noah see each other in the school hallway. She's there for the journal. He's there to stalk Elena because she looks like Katherine and he wants to play with her. We also learn here that Anna hasn't told the other vampire that she's working with that Katherine isn't in the tomb (naturally, as he appears to be a Katherine-devotee).

So, Katherine's scorecard (that we know of):
a. her baby's father in Bulgaria
b. Trevor
c. Stefan Salvatore
d. Damon Salvatore
e. Noah
f. Mason

And at least three of those (Trevor, Damon, Mason) were under a very deep misapprehension about how much Katherine cared about them (we don't know if Noah or her baby's father had any illusions about her loving them). Pearl considered them best friends, and Katherine was willing to sell her out without hesitating. As Rose said, making the mistake of trusting Katherine will not lead to anything good, because she is only loyal to her own survival.

Damon has found someone to dance with now. Elena and Stefan are on the sidelines, complaining about him having fun, I guess. The moment of light-hearted mocking is broken when Elena thinks she sees Noah. Stefan goes after him, but he's a decoy. Not sure whether or not he was compelled and Noah dies in this episode, so I'll consider it irrelevant for counting purposes.

Elena gets another call from Noah and he threatens to kill Jeremy if she doesn't go out the door to the hallway, so she does. She starts running as soon as she's out the door. He, naturally, doesn't bother, what with being a vampire with superspeed and all that. He throws her over/into a table that happens to have papers and pencils on it, so she grabs a handful of pencils. When he goes for the bite, she stabs him a couple of times, though she doesn't manage to stake him. She makes a stake out of a mop handle, but he catches it and throws it away. He goes for her neck, but Stefan's there and tosses him away. Damon is waiting by the door with a stake. He tries to convince Noah that they are just there to talk but isn't believed and Noah goes for Elena and Stefan - Damon throws the stake to Stefan, who stabs the Noah in the gut. Teamwork!

And now it's time for a spot of torture. The person doing the torture this week will be Stefan Salvatore.

Noah was around the same time as Stefan and Damon, and Katherine was playing with him, too. The Salvatore boys had not even been aware of him. Hmm. Anyway, Damon wants to know what his plan is for getting in the tomb, but Noah refuses. A little more torture from Stefan. Damon continues to interrogate and Stefan continues to torture (Elena looks away). He finally gives away that the answer is in the Gilbert journal (Anna is listening and watching from outside the room but sneaks away after this point). He refuses to give up who else he's working with - Stefan looks over at Damon and Damon nods his permission for Stefan to stake the guy.

Elena is shaken by the sudden staking - how will they find the other vampires that he was working with? - but both Stefan and Damon are in agreement. He had an invitation into her home; he had to die. Alaric is passing by outside the door and Damon goes to investigate while Stefan comforts Elena.

Damon confront Alaric in the hallway and Damon attempts to compel Alaric into telling him the truth. Alaric is able to lie, thanks to the vervain he has clutched in his hand. It does remind me of something - a vampire can't tell if you're falling for compulsion. Damon couldn't tell that Elena wasn't being compelled in FNB until she slapped him and he couldn't tell that Alaric wasn't being compelled here. Alaric is shaky but relieved that the vervain worked.

Damon and Stefan lean in the school hallway, chatting.

"No way was he working alone."
"You are."

Possibly not the best thing to say when you're trying to convince your brother that you're going to help his diabolical plan, Stefan. Stefan may realize this, too, as he moves the subject onto Emily's grimoire and extends that offer again.

"My offer still stands."
"With some hidden caveats, no doubt."
"No, nothing hidden about it. No lies, no deception," Stefan lies. "I'm there when you open up that tomb. You and Katherine go and the other twenty-six vampires die."
"If I agree?"
"I'll help you."
"Why should I trust you?"
"Because I'm your brother."
"No, that's not going to cut it."
"Because I want you gone."

This, Damon considers more seriously, studying Stefan's face, then finally agreeing. Stefan is a good liar when he wants to be. I am curious about what he thought Damon's reaction to his betrayal would be - after the road trip and then this episode, his fears re: Damon harming Elena seem to have subsided, but it's not as though that's the only potential card Damon might play. After all, last time, he didn't go after Elena directly - he sent Vicki to Elena's brother. Stefan was so paranoid and worried about the harm that Damon would cause back in "Lost Girls" - but it was Elena that was at the forefront of that. Again, is it that as long as Damon doesn't hurt Elena, he's willing to overlook whatever else Damon might do? Or is he just doing the calculations - whatever damage Damon might cause is still less than what Katherine and the other vampires would do, and thus worth it?

At the Grill, Caroline is trying to get Matt to overlook her tactless words re: the worth of washed-up jocks. This actually kinda reminds me of Jeremy and Vicki. Not the healthiest of comparisons. Anyway, Matt doesn't want to lose their friendship, so he preemptively tells Caroline that they shouldn't date. She gets hurt and offended by this and takes off. He follows her in his truck and they end up having their big first kiss, in the crosswalk in front of his truck. It's a nice one and it leads to more.

Alaric is taking Jenna home. He asks her out on a date next Friday and she's pleased to say yes. Oh, and she finds out that his (un)dead wife's name is Isobel and she's from Virginia (and not too far from Mystic Falls).

Inside with Elena and Stefan, he wants to know if she's okay. She's not just okay, she's actually kinda got an adrenaline buzz from standing up for herself and fighting back. Stefan wishes that she didn't have to fight. Meh, Stefan, she's in a vampire world. Anyway, Stefan is in confessional mode - he lets her know about the deal that he made with Damon and also that it was a total lie. He was worried that she might take the side of the guy who wants to release hungry vampires from a tomb over his. Man, he really has a high opinion of his brother's charm.

"He can be very persuasive and you two have... bonded lately."
"That doesn't mean I trust him. It's going to take a lot more than just a road trip and a rescue for me to forget who Damon is and everything that he's done."
"I don't want to be his enemy, Elena, but I can't let him do it."
"Then don't. And I'll help you. Whatever it takes."

They snuggle and contemplate the idea of justified deception, which is another big theme in this show. It never seems to go well (this would be another reason that I am sure Elena will remember the "Rose" confession at some point - these things never stay buried. Also, I suspect Caroline's compelling of her mom will end up having consequences at some point, as well).

Ben locks up at the Mystic Grill and we learn that he and Anna are in league (it's a small league. Well, after Noah's death, it's pretty much just them). Anna plays vampire-pounce! with Ben, like Lexi did with Stefan at the start of "162 Candles" and she lets Ben know that Noah was killed by the Salvatore brothers.

Timeline:

Elena is still filling Stefan in on what happened in "Bloodlines", so it must be soon after. She's wearing a different shirt, though.

During a night, Jeremy is doing sketching and answers the door for pizza. Elena is wearing her shirt from earlier, so I'm saying it's the same day she was talking to Stefan.

During a day, Jeremy gets his 'A' paper back, so at this point, it's been at least a week since "History Repeating". That night, Elena is spooked by the pizza vampire.

The next day, she and Stefan talk about said pizza vampire, and Caroline and Matt are making signs at the school for the '50s dance. That night is the dance and all the rest of the episode's events.

This episode covers 3 days/3 nights.

Total time; pilot-FNB: 6 days/7 nights

I think that the biggest time jump - roughly 1 1/2 months, rests in between these two.

Total time; FT-Haunted: 9 days/9 nights

Total time; 162C: 2 nights/1 day

Total time; HR-Bloodlines: 4 days/3 nights

Total time; Unpleasantville: 3 days/3 nights
