I think she doesn't look too hard to stretch herself at this point, because she's a working actress and she's been one for almost her whole life. And I think she's got a set career path for herself doing these kinds of roles forever. Until she's playing the cute-but-naughty little old lady, Betty White kind of roles. It doesn't look like she's got the bigger ambition to be a lead star or produce. She's very good at what she already does, and she's made a name, so I guess she can do that if she wants.
It's a distinction between her approach and SMG who has done fewer and odder projects in recent years - or Dushku who could play 'damaged bad girl' for a long long time but is doing 'Dollhouse' to get a behind the camera credit and to maybe demonstrate a broader range than most people would otherwise think she has. It could be a failure, and it might not work, but it's definitely ambitious.
