I'm glad you mentioned this. I've always felt that that moment in DD was when he really did *finally* get it. The way he looks at her when she tells him she'll never leave him, and the way he shouts at her to hurry up (having, for the first time, accepted her vow), really goes to emphasise the guilt he is feeling at both having instilled this much devotion in her, and of course, finally gifting himself with her (or so he thinks...)
