Doctor Who: More on Planet of the Ood (music-related)

So, the Doctor's song may be ending soon. What's that about? I've got no notion. Isn't that fun?

The bit of the Doctor's theme that plays at the end of PotO goes sliding down fast, much faster than it plays in the straight-up 'Doctor's Theme'. It is, in fact, exactly the version of the song that appears over the driving beat of 'Doomsday' (all of the 'Doctor's Theme' is much... dreamier than the more intent version that is sung during 'Doomsday').

Note: Ah-ha. A mystery is solved. Though the melody from DD is not the same as "The Doctor's Theme", it is still the same as the music that happens when Rose enters the TARDIS (as pointed out by [livejournal.com profile] cookie2697), which is not "the Doctor's Theme" and does not appear to be on the soundtrack of first series (unless someone else finds it there!).

And here's the imeem link if the embed doesn't work.

They're the two halves of a whole -- she's the driving, burning determination and he's the lone, calling voice. Each reaching out. Each still lost.

And that is all the meta that I have for right now.

If they keep putting in things like this, I will begin to lose my fears that they don't know what they're doing.

And the music is so lovely and sad.

I know! They keep giving me hope!

And the music is so lovely and sad.

The 'Doomsday' music can make me cry all on its own. Which I feel is profoundly unfair of it.

[identity profile] principia-coh.livejournal.com 2008-04-20 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
It was clearly the Doom music... which indicates that that sad song is ending for him soon. I hope, at any rate.

*nods*

I'm hoping it's the opposite of what we got in last season's third episode -- in Gridlock, what sounded like a message of hope was truly a warning of something terrible. I'm hoping that this is the other way around -- that what sounds like a warning is actually the herald of hope.

[identity profile] rynne.livejournal.com 2008-04-20 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
They're the two halves of a whole -- she's the driving, burning determination and he's the lone, calling voice.

That
is a beautiful way to put it, and I completely agree.

OH CRAP.

Until the very end, I wasn't sure what you were trying to do with layering other music and stuff. But, oh god, amazing. It is just the exact same bit of music continuing. Hee, I love you *hugs*

*hugs back*

Thanks! I have to say that it does give me hope -- in PiC, we heard Rose's beating heart and, here, we hear the Doctor's voice still calling.

[identity profile] katesutton.livejournal.com 2008-04-20 12:58 am (UTC)(link)
SNIFF. I love that. Also I love how that Rose may be the one coming to yet again rescue the Doctor. She is so the hero of their story.

Oh, love this. As I was watching, I thought that this had to be another Rose call out. The Oods sad song came to an end, and the Doctor's will need to as well since... she is returning.

[identity profile] butterfly.livejournal.com 2008-04-20 04:02 am (UTC)(link)
She is!

*bounces*

I kinda love how very subtle this call-out was. Because... this episode is infused with the memory of Rose whether or not the Doctor actually says her name because she's the one who was with the Doctor when we met them and she bonded with them. She was the one who actually noticed that what was happening with them was off, though she didn't get time to investigate it. The questions that this episode answers are the ones that Rose brought up that the Doctor didn't even think about or notice. I like that this other reminder of her is also subtle but haunting.

[identity profile] purplemonster77.livejournal.com 2008-04-20 01:14 am (UTC)(link)
Thanks for that!

So ... if I've got this straight - in PiC, the Doomsday theme was layered under the Doctor's theme but they weren't quite connected, just like Rose and the Doctor were so close but missed each other. And now that we have the lone Doomsday voice over "your song will end" ... so the sorrow of Doomsday is going to end? :D I like that idea.
ext_1774: butterfly against blue background (Default)

[identity profile] butterfly.livejournal.com 2008-04-20 03:57 am (UTC)(link)
In PiC, when we just had Rose, we only had the thrumming instrumental beat of the Doomsday theme. In the recent episode, we only had the vocal melody of that same theme when we heard that the Doctor's song might be ending soon. Musically speaking -- they're incomplete without each other. Also, definitely, I get the implication that the grief-cry of "Doomsday" may be the song that the Ood are referring to -- makes me wonder if they have a bit of prescience mixed in with their telepathy.

[identity profile] tsukara.livejournal.com 2008-04-20 01:22 am (UTC)(link)
*flaility flaility flail*

That is the best damn thing ever.

I do love the symbolism of the two halves of the whole trying to find each other. It's an English major kind of love.

English major love is the best kind of love!

*grins*

The Doctor and Rose actually make me happy on so many levels.

I'm thoroughly delighted by the music union as expressed by the "Doomsday Theme" and the fact that Rose is the beat and the Doctor is the melody. Just on a purely symbolic level, they complete and complement each other.

So, the Doctor’s song may be ending soon. What’s that about? I’ve got no notion. Isn’t that fun?

Well, I’ll admit I was a little worried about the Tardis (for about ten seconds). She’s always the first thing I think of when someone mentions singing on Doctor Who. (“There was this singing…”)

But then I realized that I was being stupid. The Tardis has got to be the safest character in the story. All of the actors can be replaced. But the Tardis is Doctor Who.

So I’m drawing a complete blank. But I like the idea that it’ll turn out to be something good (just like “You are not alone” turned out to be something bad).

They keep giving me hope.

[identity profile] butterfly.livejournal.com 2008-04-20 03:45 am (UTC)(link)
They really do keep giving hope.

Also, once again, the story this episode was about a second chance at life. This time, the Doctor wasn't even the reason that things went well (they would have gone about the same regardless of his presence, because Ood Sigma (?) totally had things under control), which is a huge difference from this time last series (Gridlock) when he was, literally, the only person capable of saving the people of New Earth.

Nifty, though, sadly, not as accurate as I originally thought! The music isn't the Doctor's Theme... but the Doctor's Theme isn't what's playing when Rose first enters the TARDIS. Oh, the complications caused by an incomplete soundtrack.

Now, I'm going to see if I can track this bit of song and see if it acquires a name before "Doomsday".

That was fascinating. Thanks for doing that.

I will contradict briefly though and say - go back and watch Rose. The Doctor's Theme is NOT what's playing the first time Rose walks into the TARDIS. It's the vocals from the Doomsday theme WITHOUT the pulsing beat. I never noticed before until I rewatched during [livejournal.com profile] dwrewatch this winter, but it was kind of startling to hear it and see how much it stood out. The Doctor's Theme is used frequently in that episode, but NOT when Rose first walks into the TARDIS.

Here...youtube clip of that scene. It happens around the 55 second mark.

Oooh. Great compilation.

They do stuff like this and I start... wondering if they might actually know what they're doing. :D

I definitely think there was hope in the Ood's message. The episode was about the Doctor reacting to THEIR sad song, so it makes the most sense to me that they were reacting to his pain in return. *flail*

I begin to suspect that they know everything! Except how to handle unrequited love! They could use a little bit of work in that area.

Reverse image of Gridlock, that way. It would be rather fitting and I'm sure the structure of it would appeal to RTD.

[identity profile] thehornedgod.livejournal.com 2008-04-20 06:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Aha. Clever you. I wasn't sure if the Doctor's song signified his sorrow at being separated from Rose or, as with the Ood, being cut off from the telepathic connection with his people.

If they'd been using the Doctor's Theme, I'd lean on the side of Gallifrey, though I do think that last season had a bigger focus on Gallifrey angst than this one (just as one had more focus on it than two). But this particular song, especially after they used a piece of it in "Partners in Crime" with the Rose scene, really does imply that it's about Rose.
