Smallville Season Five: Splinter

This may be my favorite episode of Smallville ever. Just... wow. I loved seeing into Clark's fears, seeing how they progressed from panic to hysteria to near-madness. Tom Welling continues to absolutely knock my socks off (in the commentary James Marsters talks about how impressive he finds Tom, as an actor, and I am definitely agreeing). I mean, wow.

I feel a teeny, tiny bit dirty about finding Clark incredibly hot when he's in the last stages of his paranoia. He looks anxious, broken, and more than a little insane, but, wow, he's pretty. When he smiles at Lex holding a gun on him -- that's so freaking hot, man.

And the things that he says to Lana before he tries to choke her make him sound so much like the many, many meteor mutants who have attacked her over the years. The ending, where she tells him that 'she knows' that he would never hurt her, is very creepy, made more so by the way she says it. I can't really describe it, but it's just...

KK is really spectacular in the this episode. The drawing together of Lex and Lana is feeling very natural to me, because the two character are really so much alike in their fascinations and fears. Their mutual obsession with Clark, everything they both lost with the meteor shower, the need to never be lonely, their driving need to know what's going on, no matter what the cost -- they are well-suited to each other.

Tom Welling is just awesome throughout this episode, IMO. He even stated in the July/August issue of the SV mag that this was his favorite episode of the season. Clark is just creepy as hell. I tell ya if I were Lana, I'm not sure if I would have...um...nevermind. :D

I feel the same.

Tom is killer, wow, dude. I mean, even from the beginning, I liked him, but starting around the beginning of season three, he was just seriously kick-ass, in major way. He was so amazingly creepy in this episode.

And hot. Can't forget that part.

*smiles* Splinter rocks out as one of my favourite Season 5 episodes. I love, love, love it to bits. If I remember correctly, I had to split my meta post on that ep into two parts I was so squeeful about it! And I totally concur on Lex/Lana--they parallel them so well in Season 5. Lana's journey mirrors that of Lex's in earlier seasons--you can see where it's all headed.

It was the most disturbingly sexy ep ever. *nods*

I'd love to read that, bop_radar. One of the things I love most about this episode on a writing level is that Clark's dreams aren't just, "WTF? Why would he dream that?" It's actually based in prior truths.

Part 1 and Part 2 :-)

I thought the exploration of Clark's dreams and fears was incredibly good--one of those eps that made me think: see! the writers DO know their characters!

Thanks! I really enjoyed that. :)

Splinter is so great. I had to watch it twice, that's how wowed I was.

Indeed. Knowing where they end it, it's so easy to see how their connections all made sense. They were always going to this place -- it explains the echo of 'secrets and lies' from them both and the various mirroring that they do of the two of them.

Oh, yeah. At least with the redK, Clark was willing to extend some level of trust to people -- with the silver, he doesn't have any. And yet, so hot.

Loved Splinter! The Lexana was definitely really well developed in season 5. Maybe a little bit rushed in the end IMO, but othewrwise full marks.

I loved Clark's confrontation with Lex, "All the things you do to me". The scene with the Kents!

Such a great episode. Lana seeing the ship was shiver-worthy.

Yes! Clark was so fascinating in this episode.

Exactly! That's why I love them together.

They really are a good match.
