Well, they went and stripped away some of the layers, starting at the very beginning. Making Justin 17 made him seem very naive compared to Nathan's cocky 15. They took away a lot of what made Stuart such a star -- he'll go to the wall for you while complaining incessantly about how much trouble you are. And he's vulnerable in a way that Brian wasn't (I don't know if that's changed since I stopped watching). And Brian is all alpha and top dog about it all, while Stuart was just about the sex. Stuart will get on his knees, because sex isn't about dignity -- it's about having a bloody good time and if Stuart Alan Jones wants to give a man a blow job, he's not going to worry that it'll make him look weak. He knows that he isn't. He knows that he's lovely and that's enough for him.
And Vince... much as I adore Hal Sparks and Michael, Michael comes across as stunted in a way that Vince didn't. Vince is a fan, Michael's been fucked up by his mom (don't get me started on how much better Hazel is, mom-wise) and Brian.

I do think Brian does become a more sympathetic character as the show goes on, but he's no Stuart, that's for sure.
