Stargate SG-1; Reckoning thought

So, moving on from yesterday's Jossverse kerfluffle, yeah?

Daniel Jackson is no longer sympathetic to human-form replicators.

Very interesting.

And I wonder if it's all connected -- his ascension and his new-found certainty of what makes up life. Because if his time ascended taught him what a soul is and he can feel that lack in Replicarter that's just... very interesting.

It's this exchange in Reckoning 2 that particularly intrigues me.

Daniel: "But the universe is infinite. It’s not just knowledge and information – it’s understanding on a level that you’ll never reach."
Replicarter: "Why do you think that?"
Daniel: "Because you’re a machine."
Replicarter: "So are you – just of weaker construction."
Daniel: "And that’s where you’re wrong."

Especially when we set it with what he tells Jack in Abyss.

Daniel: "Come on, Jack. Y-You think the Asgard named uh, a ship after you because they thought it was a cool name? Now's not the time to play dumb. You're a lot smarter than that. They saw our potential in you...because of you are and what you've done. Humanity's potential...that's the same thing Oma saw in me."

Daniel: "Right now, I can't imagine doing or being anything other than what I am. I see things, I understand things, in a way I never could have before. But I chose this. Even when Jacob was trying to heal me, I chose this. But you in the place you're at right now...you don't have any other choices. This is not your life we're talking about, Jack! This is your soul!"

He's making a definitive statement here, that humans are more than biological machines. That there's something more there, something lacking in Replicarter. That she's not capable of reaching that higher level of understanding.

"Your father made you wrong." But maybe he didn't. Maybe that's the best he could do.

There was a kerfuffle yesterday? What did I miss?

Oh, wait, you mean the other thing -- not SG fandom. Got it. Never mind. *g*

I can see where I was unclear, though.

SG fandom has been exceedingly welcoming and kerfluffle-free for me. Though I'm glad I missed the real-time of Meridian and SDJ.

God, that's right! I forgot about Daniel and the original replicator girl! And that episode ended with such a powerful scene where Daniel calls Jack a son of a bitch (or what ever the expletive was).
It is a turn-around and combined with his certainty and powerplay, it does raise some interesting questions about what Daniel knows now. Good catch.

Such a wonderful scene. In fact, I loved that entire episode.

I'm just really interested about where they're going with Daniel's character. That's always been the part of the show that intrigues me the most.

Me too and I forgot it! Go figure.

Daniel's growth didn't used to be the part that intrigued me the most, but it is quickly becoming so. I blame it all on Sci-Fi's reruns where I see early, earnest, floppy-haired Daniel one hour and then the next I see harder, short-haired Daniel and the juxtaposition is just WOW.

He's changed so much and yet... he's still Daniel. And he's had the most amazing accidental character arc ever, I think.

Daniel Jackson is no longer sympathetic to human-form replicators.

That's an interesting line of thought. Ascended!Daniel got to see through and beyond and into so he obviously knows something; does he share with the rest of the class? (Erm. Also: does he have his ascended memories back?)

Just curious: Do you see the replicators as "just machines?" (I ask, because I'm having problems with "just machine"-ing the Cylons and since I haven't seen S8, I'm still mixed up about the Replicators and their "humanity." I... I have the tendency to be blindsided by appearances and the simulation of humanness.)

We know that he has some selected memories back. And there's definitely been a shift in his attitude and his methods.

And I waffle on the actuality of artificial intelligence and its possible limitations, but I would buy that, specifically, the replicators might be just machines. In the context of the series and based on the current evidence.

Hard to say. Fifth had some interesting potential and I liked Reece.
